You only have to patch if you want to run the SkyOS apps on windows.

The API has probably either changed or been updated since the SkyOS support was added.

I thought the SkyOS was based on Unix. Didn't know it was compatible with Windows in any way.

It would be great to have emulators (or compatibility layers) "integrated" in the system:

Oh, well... seems that his site is interesting too:

SkyOS isn't based on neither Unix or Windows. You could run SkyOS apps on Windows if you used the ReactOS compability layer on Windows.
Here is some info: http://www.skyos.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=18724

Most people don't know what skyos is, and probably don't want a compatablity layer for it (I would try to remove it). Also going to point out that it is no longer a free operating system.

Why remove something that is already functioning? I can see if you were making an opposition to developing it to begin with, but this is something that some of the devs were interested in and worked on. Side projects like this are needed to keep our talented developer's from becoming tired and burned out from working on just one thing. I would encourage the developers to do more things like this if that is what gives them a break to be able to continue the more intensive ROS specific tasks. Also, compatibility in anyway shape or form is always a worthwile goal.

I hink SkyOS developers are the people to add this dll to ReactOS.They need it,not ROS users...There is no special software written for SkyOS!

For what version of SkyOS is the compatibility layer written ?
I am trying to run progs from the latest beta (skyos 5.0 beta 8.4)
I also tried progs from skyos 4, doesn't work either.
so what version of skyos compatiblity is it ?

Edit :

Message is

Code: Select all

ERROR_CHILD_NOT_COMPLETE - The Application cannot be run in Win32 mode
(ps renamed .app to .exe, ROS doesn't reconise .app as a prog)

I didn't say they can't work on it, i just don't want it included in the kernal for people who don't want it.

Even if it is functioning there is still the possibility that it has security bugs or bugs that affect my system.

is it not in the kernel i think.
it is just some dll files to support the skyos api.
i don't think they are loaden if you don't use skyos apps.
But i can't get any skyos prog to work...

The screenshot on the skyos forum, is a skyos5 screenshot ...
Maybe i need dll's from skyos ?

SkyOS don't actually have any reason to develop this DLL, otherwise noone would have any reason to use their OS. It would be a bit like Microsoft providing the libraries for Linux to use Windows programs.

No, someone from ReactOS made it,
http://www.reactos.com:8080/archives/pu ... 04425.html

Robert Szeleney (main dev from skyos) is willing to help make ros skyos compatible..

Since one of Windows' strengths is its wide range of compatible software, they could lose business by letting other OS's access that software. So I guess since SkyOS' strengths lie in other areas, they wouldn't suffer in the same way.
Well, in any case, it's nice to have their support.
