If you don't want to get too dicey with messing with the ntoskernel and/or the ntldr, simply do this:
Make a 640X480 screen at 16 colors save as boot.bmp
Place boot.bmp into your \windows\ folder
Edit boot.ini
Add to your default XP load line: /bootlogo /bootnogui
You'll now boot up with your own custom screen, nothing fancy, no animation bar or anything, but a quick and simple way to customize your bootup.

Like I said on the blog: maybe it's better to not to introduce it until 0.4.0. It's nice that a new major version has visible differences from its precedessor.

If you comile ReactOs 0.3.0 from source you can change the bmp, or using ResourceHacker app (or similar) on bootvid driver.
ReactOS 0.3.0 didn't have the boot-progressbar, so the progressbar won't show up.
Or just wait for 0.3.1 or 0.3.2

Guys, it's dissapeared now. But it will come back. I have started the 'bring back the bootscreen' campain. Go on the design forum, click it and vote for your favourite!

Personally, I hated the XP cloned boot screen that was added in the past.
Current boot screen is much more clean, useful and, why not, genuine.
Sincerely,
