Poll: Would you buy a printed/packaged Ros-cd in support?
We've been thinking and talking in another thread to maybe make and sell our own CD's. This is a poll to see how much interest there would be for such a thing. Depending on the interest, I may risk it, and try to sell it (obviously, the major part of any profit - if there is any - would go to Reactos, but depending on the 'stock' left over, there might be none, ofcourse - and even the reverse. Also, the price depends on the amount I can order (obviously), and while it can go as low as 5 euro/$ (selling price), let us presume the first time will be a limited set only, and cost $10 euro. And even then I would have to order a minimum amount. Let's see if we get there.
This would include a printed CD, a case with cover (both made in the excellent style/colours of what bnts has created: http://www.reactos.org/forum/viewtopic. ... =45#p90159 ) and maybe a 1 page leaflet.
Would you buy a printed/packaged Ros-cd (max. 10 euro) as support?

I voted yes, but would be more supportive of the effort if it was done with a fairly stable/hardware-compatible (even just basic hardware) build.
Reminds me slightly of the way Ubuntu was originally trying to get their name out by shipping the free CD's.

I used to buy Mozilla and Firefox CDs all the time and give them to people. You might be surprised how much an average person values having a nice physical shiny object. They never even cared that the first thing it would do after installation was go out and grab a completely new update. Of course back then it was updating 2.0.0.4 to 2.0.0.11 or some such, so it seemed like less of a jump. Their new rapid release version numbering BS makes offering CDs basically impossible now. Finally got the v11 CDs out? Oh v13 is here already!
Although I am not sure ReactOS is quite ready for printed CDs. Perhaps as it gets closer to 1.0?
Also an OS isn't quite as easy to kick around as an application program. A physical CD probably should have the ability to run as a Live CD so it is easier for people to kick around. At the same time it should be able to act as an install CD, so the two types would need merging.

I would, if it's more mature
Re: Poll: Would you buy a printed/packaged Ros-cd in support
Most of us would buy a CD to support ReactOS, but what about people that dont know about it? (talking about the poll)
I think it would be better if you wait for 0.3.15

Re: Poll: Would you buy a printed/packaged Ros-cd in support
Well, it's more of a show of support in the first place. Of course, if Ros were at the 1.0 mark, it would make even more sense (in a commercial setting), but in the context of sponsoring/support in development it makes more sense to do it before it reaches 1.0; after all, it's now that it's most needed.FlyingIsFun1217 wrote:I voted yes, but would be more supportive of the effort if it was done with a fairly stable/hardware-compatible (even just basic hardware) build.

I know; even beta would be better, functionality-wise. But really, people should see this more as an additional, special sponsoring effort. And who knows? In 20 years time, it could be a collectors item, worth a tenfold of what you pay now.
Yes, that was my idea at first too. And since the 'useful' (selling) period is going to last longer (we're pretty much at the end of the 3.14 life-cycle, I presume), I could go for a larger amount, then. However... I would rather have a first 'test', to see how everything goes. This will mean a smaller total amount and thus more costs per CD (and thus the $10 euro price), but viewed as a whole, it wouldn't be as expensive and less of a risk (I won't be left with a huge stock if I only order 15-25 pieces ). And it has the advantage to act as a general repetition. Most of us would buy a CD to support ReactOS, but what about people that dont know about it? (talking about the poll)

If all goes well, and no problem occurs, I will do the same but with a much larger sample (maybe 500) for the 3.15 version, at which point I can let the price go down to $5 euro, which in turn would give it some broader appeal to those that can't afford much in support.
This way of doing things seems to be the most prudent and rational.

This is exactly what I was thinking.FlyingIsFun1217 wrote:I voted yes, but would be more supportive of the effort if it was done with a fairly stable/hardware-compatible (even just basic hardware) build.

That will come, in due time. For now, just see it as an additional form of sponsoring, and as a possibility to get your hands on a collectors' item.
Hmm... that said...9 thusfar. Doesn't seem like all that much. Even for the first limited try, I need at least 25. That's the minimum required. Well, maybe even 15 would do, if I'll take the loss (potentially 10 CD's then) for myself, as a gesture towards Ros. But 9 really isn't enough to warrant such an experiment.
I think it's a pity, though. I would have liked to try it, and I'm sure bnts would have too. But if it doesn't augment to at least 15, there is really not enough enthusiasm for it, I guess - in which case I'm not going to do it.
Well, ok: maybe I'm being too hasty. I'll see how it comes out after the poll ends in two weeks.
Re: Poll: Would you buy a printed/packaged Ros-cd in support
I voted No, however when it reaches beta then I might be more inclined to do so.
Re: Poll: Would you buy a printed/packaged Ros-cd in support
12...getting closer...
Re: Poll: Would you buy a printed/packaged Ros-cd in support
I think the next version will be 0.4.0 instead of our thoughs of 0.3.15 so you should wait for 0.4.0 and then sell that version. People will find it more useful than 0.3.14
Re: Poll: Would you buy a printed/packaged Ros-cd in support
I wonder how long of a wait that would be. I was thinking just the latest (stable!) build would be good.
Re: Poll: Would you buy a printed/packaged Ros-cd in support
True; some posters have already suggested the same (to wait for the next release). From a technical-Ros viewpoint, I concur. Of course later versions will be more useful. However, as said in one of my former posts, it's as much an additional show of support than for the technical capacity of the version being printed. Also, I think I should first have a small 'general repetition', to see how things work out (things like, if the examples of bnts are high enough resolution, if the colours turn out alright in actual print, how the package turns out, the set-up for selling it, the dealings with the printing service, etc.).jonaspm wrote:I think the next version will be 0.4.0 instead of our thoughs of 0.3.15 so you should wait for 0.4.0 and then sell that version. In the end, it's just a try. If it is moderately successful, I'll continue it (with the next release(s)), if not, I won't. I will buy one of my own stock, just as an additional support for Ros and as a potential collector's item. I actually want to have a nice little Ros-CD.
But, it's all up to oneself, of course. As long as I get minimal 15, I'll take the risk. If not, then I won't. That's pretty much the basics of it.

it´s ok, but keep in mind that people you sell the CDs may encounter bugs and finally dislike ReactOS because they don´t know it is a work-in-progressWebunny wrote:

Re: Poll: Would you buy a printed/packaged Ros-cd in support
Well, for the people here that buy it, that should be obvious. It's also mentioned on the graphical cover of bnts. It basically comes down in making clear what it is, and that it is an alpha release, and thus more for testing then for everyday use. As long as one makes this clear in front, I don't see any problems. Again: for the alpha en beta versions one can't expect it to be in any commercial purpose or settings, and that's why I'm also prepared not only to do it for free, but actually to have a net loss. It's obviously not a commercial project (yet).jonaspm wrote:it´s ok, but keep in mind that people you sell the CDs may encounter bugs and finally dislike ReactOS because they don´t know it is a work-in-progressWebunny wrote:

The release (if I get 15) will be geared towards interested fans and supporters of Ros, testers and IT-tinkerers, thus.
Or maybe item-collectors .
