0.3.14 and + drivers

Post by wpeckham »

Has anyone attempted to use drivers from the UNIVERSAL DRIVER DISK?
As far as I can tell, these were written as Win2K and WinXP drivers and are not restricted.
If they work as well with ROS as they a re reported to with Windows, this could solve many problems.

If anyone knows if/how these work: please provide some feedback or perhaps a how-to (or three) somewhere and drop the link here.

You're not very specific I'm afraid, it would help if you could link to these drivers.
(Google mentions not entirely legal collections of drivers).

For end-users these drivers are fine (at your own risk etc) and it would be nice if they all work in ReactOS. It's very unlikely that such a driver pack can be integrated into ReactOS and distributed as part of the operating system. This due to copyrights and lack of redistribution permission by driver vendors as well as Microsoft. Linux has it a bit easier in this department: (almost) every driver(-component) is opensource and thus free to integrate, redistribute, modify etc as long as living up to licensing conditions.

As far as I can tell that is just yet another collection of various manufacturer provided drivers. So unless that has some specific older drivers that aren't available any more anywhere else, it is more useful just to download directly from the manufacturer's web site to get the latest. With ReactOS you really have to check compatibility on a driver-by-driver basis anyway.

These: http://driverpacks.net/
would be a much better alternative. Not to integrate, but for the end users.

Those can actually be mirrored and included in rosapps. The compatible ones would complete nicely the content of "Drivers" category.

Except neither DriverPacks nor ReactOS have any rights to distribute the drivers (they are copyrighted software).

Normal drivers are Freeware and have no restrictions to be spread as long as they are unmodified.
ReactOS is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes.

One of these programs might be cool to have in the downloader, a few are free. They scan every piece of hardware against a database of drivers and install all the latest drivers, great software.

While I am not aware of anyone being sued for it, most drivers have a license that comes with them or that you agree to when downloading from the manufacturer that prohibits redistribution.
