I know this topic is slightly aged (although not that much), but I was thinking about an old project I worked on that might show you the capabilities of Active Desktop.

adp.sourceforge.net

I haven't updated it for a long time (since they took out Active Desktop support). It could have shown dynamically updated information from websites, shown you RSS feeds, notify you of email and let you read it, let you browse the computer, access the control panel, search or browse the internet, control your sound programs, get notified of new topics and private messages from forums, set up a calendar with reminders, animated backgrounds, desktop effects (falling leaves and snow and whatnot), and all kinds of next-gen internet features (compatibility with igoogle apps, facebook notifications and messages, multi-client IM (msn, aol, etc.), blogging software, and probably apps. All done in PHP, and all within the confines of the desktop.

If ReactOS had Active Desktop support, I would definitely redesign those scripts from scratch.

I don't see a point in that when you have desktop widgets that do the same thing but way better. Not only that, the feature was discontinued in vista.

But at the moment the focus is on compatibility up to Server 2003.

Let's try this from a different angle: is SetWindow implemented in User32 and able to attach a window to the desktop, replacing the wallpaper?
