Not ready for prime time

Not ready for prime time
Have been working with ROS as a virtual machine via an Ubuntu host. I love the idea and I hope it can be developed into a viable product but at the moment it's as broken as WINE. There are too many instances of lockups and freezes, added applications seem to load just fine but wind up hanging. The remove software application fails in the control panel ,many other things. My search goes on for an option or emulation program or process that will run Windows software in a Linux environment.
Re: Not ready for prime time
Have you tried Windows?
Those guys at Microsoft have done a great job of getting Windows software to run on it

Re: Not ready for prime time
Try Win4Lin. It requires Microsoft Windows installation.
Re: Not ready for prime time
Try installing Windows in a virtual machine.
No seriously. While people might be ridiculing a bit your demand for high standards (after all, how many native Linux apps can Windows run?), it is understandable that for specialised things you may wish to run Windows; I suggest you try it in a virtual machine.

A hefty number.Aeneas wrote:after all, how many native Linux apps can Windows run?
Re: Not ready for prime time
it's only 5:18 here - prime time doesn't happen for a while, at least. I'd say we're in the catbird seat.

I laughed when i read this for so many reasons.laugwould wrote:Have been working with ROS as a virtual machine via an Ubuntu host. 1. Know one claimed this was ready for prime time. In fact alpha means the exact opposite.
2. It's as broken as wine. Thats because a large junk of wine code is in reactos.
3. Applications lock up, and other things. Maybe thats why it's alpha.
4. As some one said. there is a solution. Install an actual version of windows in a vm.
There is another option if you have windows. Install windows and install your choice of linux distro with colinux inside windows. Lots of advantages.
1. windows compatibility is great.
2. windows driver are generally faster(simply because manufactures neglect linux);
3. colinux runs fast.
4. colinux compatibility I would say is near perfect.
Without a windows license. Wine is the best your going to get. I assume this is for gaming. Because for apps I've never had an issue.

http://colinux.wikia.com/wiki/ExpandingRoot i use the Raw copy and resize method

Re: Not ready for prime time
You geeks really need to learn how to take constructive criticism, you'll be all the better for it. J Wright, Windows owns over 90% of the desktop market all other products are trying to mimic them... not the other way around. If this product is going to be a desktop competitor to Windows or Linux it has a LOOOONNNGGGG way to go. Greenie are you serious?? LOL. If the product is not being proposed as ready for prime time then what the hell is it doing out for sale to the general public? I didn't put it out there, so if you are going to put a jacked up inferior product on the market in a half-azz capacity, at least be able to take the criticism. This damn product crashes more than any Windows OS. Here is the assumption you make, that the consumer has to deal with WINE or this product or buy a Windows XP license to run Windows apps on Linux. The technology is out there and eventually those who look hard enough will find a solution, it just won't be this one.
Re: Not ready for prime time
laugwould I wasn't attacking you. I was saying we are already aware reactos is not ready. On the front page it says reactos is not ready for production use. It also has alpha in several places. People do get a little hopeful and jump the gun with reactos. Completely missing the home page text and faq.(Hopefully this becomes a good thing in the future)laugwould wrote: Greenie are you serious?? LOL. Also we don't sell React OS it's free to use and develop. Having a website is simply a way to promote development. Not to shout to use it day to day. Believe it or not Linux had a public server long before it was usable. So did nearly every open source project at one point or another.Simply because it means people can join the effort.
As for the comment about why use windows when they are the pc market.
They are the the best option at the moment for running windows apps(not surprisingly). You might have better luck with crossfire(cleaned up wine).
Though if you do happen to have a windows license. I will help you with colinux or you could simply dl either one of these.

A lot of people here crawl through many of windows compatibility themed products. So we have good knowledge and we wish the best of luck to you in finding something we don't know and hopefully you can tell us. Though we do have plently of experience to share.
Though everyone has to have a little bit of understanding. People don't get paid to do this work. So be gentle with them ;D
You should probably private message me if you want to talk about colinux or other things you find. As this topic probably isn't the place.
Cheer up laugwould. We don't need to fight.
Re: Not ready for prime time
It's in big bold letters on the homepage of the website

Version 0.3.11 is a looong way from version 1.0
Also if you bought it you should ask for your money back. Reactos is free, always has been always will be.
Maybe you aren't familiar with open source software?

@laugwould
Next time don't buy anything that is available for free.

Re: Not ready for prime time
I have been testing ROS since version 0.2 and I love ROS. It is amazing to see ROS/Windows running Windows Apps.
I can't wait for 0.3.12.
