Why the folders are grey? It makes the explorer look kinda dull, and besides, if you have drives on grey and folders on i.e. yellow, like in Windows, it makes the tree easier to comprehend.
Observation of the explorer itself: Why the lines between items? It makes the tree look so '80ish...

I don't think that looks butt ugly...

That makes it lot easier to comprehend. Of course, in that case, the folder need some borders or contrast differences reworked on it, but still, already in this look, it is more "readable".
I also made few other changes.
- Changed few lines to proper font
- Made the expand/contract boxed pixel smaller
- Removed the lines

Opinions differ.crappish wrote:I don't think that looks butt ugly...
Sorry, but ReactOS legally can't use Tahoma since it is a copyrighted font. Wait till Greenville becomes usable in ReactOS.crappish wrote:- Changed few lines to proper font
Colors may aid recognition (the only real icon design rule), but to me this is of minor priority. I could end up "color coding" everything but it'll just look crap imho. When I have some time left after replacing all icons I'll probably make some colored folders for MacOS-style customized folder colorizing, and the user could then optionally choose yellow folders to be the default if he/she prefers that.
That's still all related to recognition. Which still is the only rule.crappish wrote:Well, to mention few rules which also apply to icons:
If you can't perceive it, you can't recognize it. Recognition.crappish wrote:-limitations of human perception (not just color blindness)
If you can't remember what it looks like, you can't recognize it. Recognition.crappish wrote:-working memory vs. long term memory (Model Human Processor, Recognition)
-cues in working memory (both, opposite and parallel)
*cough*crappish wrote:Well, that's whole another matter as I don't think there is anyone actively developing the explorer at the moment...
Also, I can replace any icon or image (in this case it's drivebar.bmp) with proper developer approval, whether the associated module is being actively developed or not.
Including, amongst other things; cell color sensivity, color blindness, focus/refocus, shape recognition and how do we process colors.crappish wrote:-limitations of human perception (not just color blindness)
This has nothing to do with remembering things. It's tad too complicated to explain in short, it is about Model Human Processor and what happens in the recognition process.crappish wrote:-working memory vs. long term memory (Model Human Processor, Recognition)
Well, this should be self evident.crappish wrote:-cues in working memory (both, opposite and parallel)
You develop the explorer? In that case, get rid of the ugly lines in the tree. 8)mf wrote:*cough*

Actually, no.crappish wrote:You develop the explorer? In that case, get rid of the ugly lines in the tree. 8)
i actually prefer the lines, though i would like them either transparent or not so dark, it's very distracting. but yes, when i do stuff like webpages and php scripting the lines help me visual the directory structures better.crappish wrote:I don't think that looks butt ugly...
