I only meant on the "reactos is loading files" bit. I like the way it lists files.Lagman wrote:I'm with Ged, I like the current loading screen, course I LIKE to know what my computer is attempting to load at start up. I think the look of the file loading is Functional yet graphically satisfying. I mean they could have made it look like Windows loading in safe mode.

How about having it so that the end user can create/use own custom bootscreen, either static, animated, selectable with or without progressbar and selectable with or without "loading file: <somefile>" text.
After all - why should selecting a boot screen be much different then selecting a wallpaper from the end user point of view? Offcourse due to the nature in code of the booting process, colors may be limmited to indexed 256 color bitmaps, but then again: what are gif's?
Also something I'd like to mention - I would very much like to se the option to not have any bootscreen at all, in favour of loading speed.

If one were to not want 100's of distributions, or unlimmited ways of altering the software by the end user, such as in the named case of the graphical behaviour of booting - then what's the point in having it open source in the first place?dreams wrote:I think it is good that the bootscreen is not easily customizable, because it is a uniform look that identifies the operating system. The same reason why we don't want 100 different ReactOS distro's.
Offcourse there should be an identifyable default boot screen - as with desktop image - but should the end users be locked with an uniformed desktop theme on the sole basis that it defines the operating system? If not, then what would be the difference in wether the end user chooses a different graphical representation of the booting process?

As I know there is Microkernel Architecture in ReactOS (Linux has monolithic Kernel, drivers are integrated into Kernel). Microkernels doesn't have implemented drivers directly, they have to load it. To implement a SVGA driver directly to the Kernel would be against the chosen Kernel design (here: Microkernel design). This is the weakness (or not) of Microkernels, that you have to load all drivers. They aren't implemented in Kernel. This makes an OS faster but less flexible at this point of view.

Someone in an OS development forum had the idea
to calc a famous fractal at his bootstage.
Fractals are something very interesting, but
I better vote for a prerendered bootscreen.
I read in a mostly homecomputer magazine from june 1987
an explanation and basic listing for a program where
you type in coordinates and viewing angle and
the computer renders a damped 3D version of the mandelbrot fractal
where the inner part is flat and blue and the rest is in up to 5 colors.
I could on the net find only very slow c64 disk image ,while waiting
for a picture i thought that at the end of the article the author wrote
some ideas for improvements and "Who has a cray at home shold fly
with the joystick"

NEVER say again or do that please. The console must be only a key combination.ROSFan wrote:Press ESC to see boot details
Me too, but set the boot behavior somewhere in control center, do not show even on first boot. Call the console anytime - yes. Do not force regular users to see em. If you plan to make a system really wide spread, skip these snob faults that Linux already made.Lagman wrote:I LIKE to know what my computer is attempting to load at start up

There are several things to mention from a sight of a general user, but I will not argue about tastes. I will also not add something technicaly useful but I think there is something to mention.
I think it's most important to end this "endless progress bar animation" trend that appeared on XP. Let's confess, it's a mockery and only Microsoft needs it As for animation, I think the progress bar is not so importent when the logo is animated or have animated elements. Anyway, these boot gui possibilities must be forseen, because general users are not us, and they choose what shiny and beautiful. Otherwise the OS will not be competitive (yes, I know how stupid to say that, but thats the truth).
As I already mentioned, the console must not be opened only a key combination, otherwise it can be taken for a system failure. And of course an boot options in control panel. Please, don't make another linux like, there enough of them already (and gui falilures they pose as original creation).
