Package Manager - Screenshot

Post by Dr. Fred »

Frik85 and me are still working on the Package Manager.
Here is a little Preview.

[ external image ]
(Screenshot made under Ros in VMware)

At the moment it doesn't do much. But I decided to program the GUI first and then add the functions.

The interface will work like this:
At the start the box below will show the online help. On the top of it is a treeview showing all programs. The user can choose one there. When he clicks on it, a description will be downloaded and shown in the box below. The user can now for example install the program by using the toolbar or a context menu. Once the user has chosen all the actions he wants to do, he clicks on the "DoIt"-Button in the middle.

He will be asked if he agrees with all license, of the programs he wants to install. Once programs are installeds, they will be moved to "Installed Programs" in the tree. I'm not sure yet if other program will appear here, too. (like in add/remove programs tab of windows) You will be also able to update Ros with this program.

The lower box is just a text field in the moment. Later that will be the emergency solution. Normally a webbrowser control will be used. This way the xml-based description can be shown easily.

I hope that I haven't forgotten something and that you like it.

Well,... that's better than no icons or even icons designed by me .
Looks great
Thank you

Click on "Installed Programs" and then the update icon (is the 4th one).
Normally all of the action icons (the first 5 ones) will be only activated if you are able to use them (e.g. you can't update a not installed program). I've just activated them to show it.

My version of the package manager has been developing... slowly... I just started school (I had like a 1 1/2 week break), and about to take the SATs, (possibly) get a huge project (the 4 individual parts would be BIG alone haha). I had been mostly working on the non-GUI part (C#'s layout system pisses me off, I like QT's much more, worst case I'll just end up using QT and statically compile).

When you want to start writing the functions we should come up with a specification for how the XML files should be written so there won't be 2 competing XML formats.

Later today I'll try and reboot to windows and work on it some and if I get anything useful I'll take some screenshots (OpenOffice is compiling on Gentoo... so maybe next week... haha)

UPDATE: 3 hours later and still compiling... Maybe tomorrow...

Were you aiming for unattended installations like in NT?

If so you might consider making some of the package manager details relate to an unattended script. Just a thought.

Don't know I've never used it.

Nope

Yep. For more details see Wiki. There is something like a XML-File specification, too.

Never heard of it. I will have a look at it.

Synaptic is a graphical package management program for apt
will there be command line options for the package manager as well? I love apt becaue it checks for and installs all dependencys so it makes installing stuff simple in linux as long as you can find a repository containing your app. Looks good so far though keep up the good work.
heres some screen shots of synaptic http://www.nongnu.org/synaptic/action.html

I would prefer this style for a packet manager...
