React OS Update= simalr to Windows update

Post by React_dude »

I think we should use a part of the wiki to create a react OS update, simlar to windows update. choosing what updates will be handeled by a C program. example:

1. user starts update program
2. update program (local) asks for version number
3. update program finds php page with the version number in the argument. EX: update.php?reactos[025][045754]
second argument= buid #, first argument #= version, in this case version 0.2.5
4. php page is displayed and user gets a choice of updates
5. user downloads updates
6. build number is updated by the updater program
updater program updates build number by adding one to it after every update. in this case there this system has performed 45754 updates since fresh install

a few words about this therory:
We need some one to maintain the update repository, plus only devs/update maintainers can post updates,we need some one to program the updater program, and if this worked we would knock the socks off of windows update!
We need a react OS Update. How would we get by wih out it.

A couple people are currently working on package management systems which should effectively include ROS Updates.

I think we firstly need a precisious build number system, not like 0.2.5.0, we need anything like 0.2.5.2432 for each file.

Additionaly we need to implement the SP_COPY_FORCE_IN_USE possibility to CopyFile.

I think the update system should not be done the same way they are heading with the package system. The update system is going to have to be able to replace even the kernel on a reboot.

I think it's good not to have to almost the same work twice. Like the add/remove app in windows has an extra "tab" for the windows install so could the packet manager have a "tab" for updates. That tab could be really user friendly.

the idea with the tab in the software dialog is imho a good solution.

Personally, I see ROS Update being more important than a packet manager...
sorta doing it backwards in my mind...

Cool down. We're at 0.2.5. Everything can happen.

package manager Yes do it this way.

Package Manger provides a controlled way of doing updates without breaking the system.

Note user does not need to see the difference. Reactos Update reports what parts.(Packages to update)

Update manager merged with browser is just a really bad idea. Provided website with way to much access.
