Having trouble running ROS on my Dell OptiPlex 755

Post by Yoshi128k »

Machine information:
  • PC: Dell OptiPlex 755 Mini-Tower from 2008
  • CPU: Intel Core2 Duo E6550 @ 2.33GHz
  • RAM: 4 GB DDR2 (4 x 1GB)
  • VGA: ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO (RV610)
  • Storage
    • 1 CD/DVD drive
    • 1st HDD: Hitachi 500GB 3.5"
    • 2nd HDD: Western Digital WD Blue 1TB 2.5"
    • 3.5" 1.44MB Floppy
I recently attempted to boot the ReactOS LiveCD (using an older 0.4.14 disc I had burned some time ago) on the OptiPlex, yet my CD-R wouldn't boot, returning:

Code: Select all

Error opening freeldr.ini or file not found
You need to reinstall FreeLoader.
Press any key
I pressed Enter, and it printed the following:

Code: Select all

Error initializing .ini file.
Press any key
I pressed Enter again and the machine rebooted. No BSOD.

Today, I tried burning a copy of the 0.4.15 (release) LiveCD, which printed the same errors.

I tried changing the SATA options (AHCI, ATA, and Legacy) and swapping the hard and optical drives around, but to no avail.

What did get the LiveCD to "boot" (i.e. display the boot menu) was disconnecting one of the hard drives. Must be something to do with how the CD boots.

After some further testing, I found that I am unable to boot 0.4.15 in debug mode; after it loads the boot drivers, I get sent to a black screen, and nothing happens. I have COM1 on the OP connected to a remote console server, and have confirmed with 0.4.14 that my setup works, but I get no output with 0.4.15. I also tried the "print to screen" mode, but nothing shows up on the screen. I also tried burning the 0.4.15 LiveCD to a USB drive, but no cigar. Thus, I cannot provide any debugging information for 0.4.15.

0.4.14 does boot in debug mode successfully, and my telnet screen (the console server allows access to its serial ports vis telnet) spat out a boatload of information as I would expect. Heck, I was even able to play with the live system for a bit!

When I tried to boot 0.4.15 without debugging, it did work, but when I hit CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to bring up Task Manager, it blue screened with a 0x0000001E STOP code (I can't remember the complete error code off the top of my head). I'm not sure if it was me attempting to open Task Manager that triggered the blue screen, or if it occurred as I was doing so.

I'm not really sure what to do next. Anyone got any ideas?

A bit of an update: I burned the LiveCD build of revision 090d563 (the most recent at the time), and got somewhat different results. I did get serial output after selecting the "Debug" option, but the computer got stuck at the gray loading screen. Confusingly, when booting in "Screen" mode, it booted successfully.

As of today: I burned a copy of the 467dec4 LiveCD (which is the most recent) onto another CD-R and have obtained the serial output of a debug boot of that (again, it gets to the gray screen, but gets stuck, specifically at ksecdd.sys). I saved it to a text file, the contents of which are below:

I also have a serial dump of booting in "Screen" mode (I configured it to also output from COM1 so I could capture the dump), which booted successfully, and I got a log from startup to shutdown. Unfortunately, it's a bit too big to fit in a forum post (at about 62K), and I don't know of any way to attach it.

It might be just a little too new to run ReactOS. IF you can find out whether it boots XP successfully, you may have a fighting chance of booting ReactOS. Have a look on the forum to see if anyone else has succeeded.

While that's an interesting configuration for its time, I wonder if focusing solely on the vintage aspects overshadows its usability in today's computing landscape. Modern tasks might be a struggle. Perhaps encouraging realistic expectations alongside the nostalgia would be helpful?
