At the moment it seems that only minor bugs are getting fixed, but nothing that hints at the implementation of new features.

What is with the new explorer?
And has anyone looked into the multi-cpu detection bug, properly working ps2 + usb + acpi
What ist with integrated smb client, so that we can connect to network shares?
And wpa encryption for wlan...

Pardon me if i sound impatiant, but i think we have to press for it before xp gets out of support.... but since i see in which direction windows is developping, i just don't want to rely on it anymore...

Win7 is somehow bearable, but as win8 makes my blood boil i decided to use either xp or reactos... or nothing.
Hello!

Not much of the development process is constantly announced, but I can ensure you, there's a lot of things going on behind the scenes. You pointed out usb, there's vgal working on it. A lot of the volunteers choose to work on minor fixes, and major additions are usually worked on by paid developers.

Also XP is already out of support for years. Wireless things are actually one of the suggestions for GSoC 2018. I think we're doing quite fine considering the amount of volunteers in ReactOS.
My working rigs:
Dell Latitude E5430 on 0.4.9-vgal - i5-3340M, USB boot.
Partially working rigs:
Ryzen 7 3700X on B450 board - 0.4.14 boot via preinstall. USB broken.

If you are unaware of the progress being made in ReactOS then you aren't looking hard enough. Have a look here on the forum at ctasan's change log and see what is on the current list. That is just the stuff being done now, more will be added as more is added to ReactOS. The amount that is being achieved is surprising.

Please re-adjust your desires for something now, downward - in line with the reality of an open source project. There is very little point in getting frustrated with progress when those that are doing the development are in effect, you and I and others like us. If we can't offer code then we can't speed the process up.

Find a way to contribute and you'll speed the whole process up. Otherwise, you'll just have to wait I am afraid. It'll be worth it.

PS. If you had a handy million £ Sterling or a million and a third in dollars - as a handy donation, it might go some way to getting ReactOS into beta within six months...or so.

The core detection issue mentioned in the first post isn't a "bug." A bug is an unintentional oversight. This is a matter of not having a multi-core/multi-CPU HAL coded. Lack of support is not the same as a bug.

Explorer New is mostly done. There are still some odds and ends to resolve and some shell support left to complete I imagine, but it is functional and Windows compatible.

WHAT?! We are seeing every release!

When I came here (Feb'14), ReactOS was a nightmare. It worked, but it was missing LOTS of things. Easily crash the system and there was a registry or file corruption, for example. Explorer was freezing constantly. Lots of drawing problems was present. No NTFS or NTVDM support was available.

Since 0.4 (Feb'16), TONS of new features and bugfixes came in. Please see this to learn what things came in.

I blame the current vomit-inducing design of the website. A non-intuitive mess that resembles fake advertisement sites, that have the same inoperable layout, and its "creators" that quickly lost interest in fixing it and abandoned it altogether after the damage has already been done. The fact the site of the international project after receiving an "upgrade" no longer has translations into different languages is absolutely atrocious and speaks a lot about the "level" of "involvement" of its "web" "team".

With that said, use either JIRA or GitHub to follow the progress, because this place is a garbage dump full of trolls, SJWs and people that need to learn_more about the project they're "supporting" instead of making passive-aggressive statements about the inner workings of WinAPI, dll wrappers and my "lack of knowledge" of them in general.

I had enough of this unceasing circus.

The ReactOS team is small with just some active developers, the OS is progressing but not so fast as you might expect. I understand your frustration over this but don't expect things ready up to the table, you can help the team by either donating or contributing some code.

So far vicmarcal and Colin are responsible for website maintaining. I'm not sure about their current status right now but I'm afraid that you're actually right in a way.

There's TONS of fixes and improvements happening all the time. Occasionally new features are added, but getting there existing stuff stable & bug-free is usually a higher priority.

Here's one commit log for you:

@dsp8195 I suggest you edit your post to be less insulting to the site maintainers and other ppl, otherwise I would have to do that... and this wont stop with a simple edit. Deadline: 02.02.18 8 PM GMT+1
ReactOS is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes.

If my post/reply offends or insults you, be sure that you know what sarcasm is...

Quanghai, forgive the trolling you see here, the forum has a few that like to complain. They are thankfully reducing in number...

Frustration sets in when an open source project does not progress in the direction nor progresses as fast as people want. Generally people are "entitled" these days to expect results now. These are often non-coders who don't understand what it takes to get an incredibly complex piece of code into a usable state. Bugs take ages to identify, find, fix, test and release and that's just bugs in the existing code.

ReactOS is hand-made, hand crafted and it won't appear now or in the near future. However, it will make continuous progress and it may be 'usable' soon.

I will define usable later...

PS. That rant by dsp about the website is a little malicious and the words misplaced. The site is fine, it is attractive and it looks professional, a little too professional in parts as it is lacking key information that should be there to dispel the myth that ReactOS is usable now. Dsp could have worded that post so much better. It sounds as if he has taken voluntary leave - two in the same number of days, good!

"I could install it on a hard drive and use it as a day to day replacement for windows, with functioning updates I can install from within the OS, Confidence that applications and drivers will work, confidence it won't randomly crash and break when doing something or running an application that would work on Windows, confidence it won't screw up my hard drive and/or bios, and confidence of the OS not slowing down or becoming unstable from any of the above. " That's how I'd define a "usable" Operating System, and how I assume anyone would define it. Basically, that's how I assume someone would expect an operating system to behave.

A conservative definition of "soon" to me is January 2020, when Windows 7 support ends.

I'm not complaining, I'm just a bit confused by you saying ReactOS will be "usable" soon.

As I said, I will define usable later...

A quick run at it:

"At some point in the development you will be able to say "it runs my programs" - You could then use it. It just depends upon your demands and your choice of apps/drivers &c. As a result ReactOS could become usable for you in a very limited sense, ie. some apps may work, ReactOS will still be unstable but some of what you want to do may eventually work. One such solution might possibly be just single apps running in sandboxed VM's. I can almost see ReactOS being bundled with apps to run in such a manner. There are so many possibilities.

Of course for others it might not be usable based upon their specific applications and drivers not working."

I think personally the project leadership should be stronger on pushing for donations. The way forward for Reactos is to get further high quality manpower. Therefore, beyond communicating about Reactos and attract volunteers, also hire developers against set tasks.

I am personally giving recurrently every month, and once a year a lumpsum. It is not big, but if we were a 1000 to do the same, it would go a long way securing paid developers, getting traction and momentum, far more new news, which in turn would create communication, volunteers etc.

I will keep donating to this amazing project and I suspect many people like me would donate gladly, would they be asked to in a more specific way than a small 'Donate' button in the site.

Small funding campaigns against a task, against a duration or any target (something like "Let's recruit 200 monthly donors to add one developer this year", with a progress bar) would motivate the competitive behaviours.

I urge Reactos leadership to leverage their amazing proposition and product so far. Anybody with some curiosity would be glad to donate if asked. Really.

Personally I will happily put my money where my mouth is, and will double my contribution to help the momentum, if asked...

I regularly read commits to ReactOS, because I am interested in it. I have noticed, that recently, there has been a lot of work on the Common Cache, and towards getting ReactOS to run on an Ext2 volume. Also, the taskbar settings now work, and, as always, there have been a lot of fixes in themes. Also, there is now a rotation bar in the boot screen. These may not be "new features", but I would not say these are all "minor" things. Also, the minor things add up. Notice how much more stable ReactOS is now, compared to many of the 0.3.x releases?

Also, the new explorer is compatible with explorer in Windows XP and Windows 2003. It uses many functions in Shell32, and is swappable with Windows 2003's explorer. The old explorer, while it was necessary for a long time, was completely incompatible with the real Windows explorer.
