linux community
why does the linux community devs keeps making again and again new distros based only on torvald's kernel only and not on something like MINIX 3(racoon)? and by the way i just saw the newest post on my facebook about the finishing touches on reactos 0.4 release and im just so excited about it and if there's anything i could wish for, then that would be for the beta to be coming so soon
Re: linux community
Because they want to make linux distros, they just use the linux kernel. When people will want to make Minix distros, then they'll take minix kernel to do that.mrgoogle wrote:why does the linux community devs keeps making again and again new distros based only on torvald's kernel only and not on something like MINIX 3(racoon)? and by the way i just saw the newest post on my facebook about the finishing touches on reactos 0.4 release and im just so excited about it and if there's anything i could wish for, then that would be for the beta to be coming so soon
Re: linux community
Uh, yeah, they're linux distros because it's the linux community.
There are plenty of FreeBSD distros too, if you're interested in those. The FreeBSD distros are way cooler than the linux ones. While linux distros are just boring generic swap-out of parts, FreeBSD distros are really experimental, like DragonFlyBSD which adds some microkernel concepts to the kernel.
I don't know why there are't Minix distros, but the OS is relatively immature so that's probably a contributing factor. I can't even get the thing to work on real hardware. Which is a shame, because I wouldn't mind using it.
I'm mostly excited for a new release of ReactOS so newbies stop using 0.3.14. If you want to use the latest and greatest ReactOS you can always use a trunk build.

why? isn't it bad to take the kernel? license problems?hbelusca wrote:Because they want to make linux distros, they just use the linux kernel. Re: linux community
how immatured is minix3 compared to reactos?? please give us some brief explanation ...PLZKonata wrote:Uh, yeah, they're linux distros because it's the linux community.

Mostly driver issues. X11 was recently up and working. The core OS is pretty solid.
ReactOS isn't even remotely stable yet. Duplicating NT is far more complex than duplicating Unix. Pretty much any kid in their basement can make a Unix, ReactOS is as far as anyone's gotten to an NT re-implementation.
Why do you keep comparing OSes? We told you it's apples to oranges. There's literally nothing similar about ReactOS and Minux or indeed ReactOS and anything, except maybe the WINE project which ReactOS works closely with.

Re: linux community
im comparing Reactos to other projects simply because i don't like the feeling of being left behind, it gives me the idea that they're already in BETA while we're still in Alpha, now that you mention NT vs Unix, is NT suppossed to be more faster and stable than Unix ??Konata wrote:Mostly driver issues. i know but why can't they try other kernels like minix3 for a change??

Because minix is not linux.
Then it would not be called a linux distribution, but a minix distribution. And people doing that would belong to the minix community.i know but why can't they try other kernels like minix3 for a change??
Re: linux community
As Konata said, you want to compare Unix-based OSes with NT-based ones, which are quite different in their concepts (there are similarities of course, but still...).mrgoogle wrote:im comparing Reactos to other projects simply because i don't like the feeling of being left behind, it gives me the idea that they're already in BETA while we're still in Alpha, now that you mention NT vs Unix, is NT suppossed to be more faster and stable than Unix ??

THIS IS NOT A [ external image ] R A C E [ external image ]
But also comparing NT and Unix's overall architecture doesn't mean they'll be fast or secure. While NT is an extremely sophisticated operating system, and, as I've said, probably the most advanced one on earth, Unix isn't anywhere near as specific about what it's exact architecture, leaving a lot to interpretation. Some Unixes, like Minix, HURD, OS X, and FreeBSD go out of their way to make their systems very sophisticated and robust, while others like Linux were made by a poorly-educated collage student in his spare time with no regard to robustness or stability whatsoever which eventually had poorly-designed dynamic infrastructures shoehorned into it. It really depends exactly what Unix system you're talking about. And even then, none of them compare to how sophisticated and complex NT is. So, again, ReactOS is taking so long because it has so much to do, more than any other OS project. The pyramids of Egypt weren't made in one day.

Also, MINIX has existed since around 1987; it was created mostly as a teaching tool. Very few people have ever taken it seriously as an "everyday use" OS, because that's not what it was designed for initially.
To the idea of mixing and matching kernels - it's not like shoving a Ford truck engine into a Daewoo, which is stupid and way too much work, but it can be done. It's more like trying to transfuse blood, but using the wrong type. It may work, it may not, and there's a good chance that the patient will die.
