Some other useres mentioned it in an other thread:
Why don't add an avatar option to this forum?

What if you could choose to enable/disable showing avatars in your profile?

I would suggest to allow avatars that aren't animated...

I think that file size limit is better. For example I have animated avatar that have only 490 bytes.

I like it when boards have avatars that fit with a theme. Maybe some ReactOS explorer icons or something similar; but otherwise, I like having an avatar.

There are several posibilities for the avatar, without loading the server.
You can set avatar files to be less than x kb.
You can enable loading avatars from another sites outside the forum (this won't load the server)

I would agree with havig avatars on the forum. I would limit the file size to 7k and 64x64 pixels.
I often use avatars on other forums to recognize who is who and be able to quickly tell who is saying certain things (assuming custom avatars).

I guess this threat could be moved to the Feedback & Suggestions Forum.

Me too. It helps with the forums usability.

I suppose that it is better to not use avatars becouse sometimes
avatars are politically influenced and that may start stupid conflicts.
For instance one creates avtar with meaning like "stop war in Irak"
then other will create avatar with oposite meaning and flame war begins.
I know one technical forum where such things happen
and avatars were disabled after that.

i personally oppose avatars but if the vast majority wants them I don't have a problem with them
