Video tutorials

Post by Vantalk »

Hello.
After suggesting about making some video tutorials, I've started recording some and posted on youtube. FOR THE MOMENT, there are only 2, simpler/common ones. Before making videos about each section of the wiki, I would like some feedback/suggestions about how they are and what should I do to improve them. Should the speed be higher, slower, explained better, or via microphone, is there a better way to accomplish the same thing etc? What do you think?
:!: The videos should be run in HD quality(720p) to see the text clear

Really nice videos!!
I think they are awesome :)
Potential improvements?
- As you aren't speaking, maybe you may add a caption to highlight an important step or data. "You may visit the ReactOS Wiki for more info", or "Speed Baudios is; 11XXX", or "A problem happened: A exception is hit".(I know the second video is not supposed to show them how to backtrace just how to set Putty, but for the future)
Overall I think they are really nice

Watching your videos I had an idea, which I would help in if you want,I have some editing skills via Camtasia or VegasPRO, my idea is creating a "Tree Videotutorial". The idea is as follows:

Code: Select all

ReactOS MAIN ///Index video: Just a long black video with Youtube captions
|
|______ReactOS Tester ///Index video: Just a long black video with Youtube captions
| |______Install ReactOS in a Virtual Machine ///Index video or explaining in 1 min what a VM is?
| |_________VBOX //Video showing how to download VBOX for Windows/Linux
| | |________"Vbox in Windows" //Video showing how to install VBOX in Windows
| | | |_________"Installing ReactOS in VBOX in WINDOWs" //Video
| | |
| | |________"Vbox in Linux" //Video
| |
| |_________Vmware //Video showing how to download Vmware for Windows/Linux
| | |________"Vmware in Windows" //Video
| | | |_________"Installing ReactOS in VMware in WINDOWs" //Video
| | |
| | |________"Vmware in Linux" //Video
| |________

Etc

-Name without quotes are just Index, which shows a Youtube caption to its Childs and its Parent
-"Names" with quotes are Real videos,a videotutorial, which shows a Youtube caption to related videos("VBOX in Windows" may show "Installing ReactOS in VBOX" so the guy can jump easily without waiting to finish or even "Debugging ReactOS with Putty in VBOX")

We could mockup with the Community this Tree, set which are the requirements of a video (ie, a video shouldnt last more than 4 minutes, if it last more it usually means that there are more than one main action being done, lets split in 2 videos then) and we can share efforts :)

This is pure R&D :)

That's a really great idea, Vic! Another benefit of such a video tree is that all the links could be kept up to date. If a newer/better video is uploaded, we just update the link in the index video. Also, if we use Closed Captions for most of the text, users could easily select different languages for each video. We would just need some volunteer translators, but I think we've already got that covered. ;)

Thanks for the interest. I'll reaply in order : )

That's a good thought. Although one question: I used some annotations in the video, do you think I should replace them with captions or use captions AND annotations?

Sounds great :D From previous experiences I learned that it's better to first see a sample of the idea than just imagine it yourself and doing it wrong ;) So I would kindly ask if you could set up a first video or sample as a model for future videos.

This sounds good too. Will 4 minutes be enough though? I really hope so, cause getting information in a really short time is very useful.
I think it would be useful to also have a list of all the videos, so users can easy select what they wish. When you search for something specific it should be easier than browsing through more videos and better than youtube search (since other less relevant results might come up). What do you say?
This is pure R&D
Oh, yeah! : D

P.S Hope we can also create some videos about developing. I'm still trying to understand how to fast build..

Ok. Should we kick it? :D

Exactly!
The day a video is "old" we can just make the other videos to link the new one, and we can move the video to the old video to the "Place where videos never return again" ;p

Also it is really flexible. Why? Well we can shoot a video with "Install ReactOS on VBOX on Linux" and really just install in "Ubuntu". But tomorrow we can create a new video called Index: Install Reactos on Vbox on Linux which links to "Ubuntu" and "Mint", and we have just to rename the old "Install Reactos on VBOX on Linux" to "Ubuntu" and add the new "Mint" one. So the structure is easily restructurable.

I need a Nobel for this!
Jkjk..But this could be even a nice PR movement, now that 0.4.0 is around the corner...

probably
I'm not too good with UNIX (yet) so if someone else wants to start first.. :) Also Vic you haven't answered any of my questions :)) I wanted to start on building and fast building ROS but don't know about the fast one..

EDIT: Is it ok to keep posting here to organize or should we find other means?

I deleted my previous post to prevent double posting.
So.. first sorry if my feedback seemed too negative. cruonit if you can add captions that would be great. We could translate them in other languages afterwards. please reply so I'll know if you can do it.
I have to prepare for some tests so my video making is somewhat slowed, but I'm still working on them so I'm sorry if I'll post a bit late. So that it will be clear for everyone I'm doing this for ReactOS (and own learning) and I will provide all the finished and raw video materials to the ReactOS Project if they find use of such materials, wish to modify the videos etc. So I'm not trying to be the "decider" (©Bush :D) on these things and others opinions would help.
Since vic didn't reply in making a sample video I'll try to build the tree as suggested and hope it will be as imagined.
Again any help is welcome on covering all areas of using & developing ROS in video tutorials. (including translations)

I'll be posting all my videos here as soon as I will upload them.

Sorry about my delay!
During the week i have time for Reactos but on weekends I am totally out. Family kidnaps me.
Tomorrow I will create a video for the Index, but we should create first a "Videotutorial" map(same as a webmap) before going shooting. Ijust did an example not a whole Map.

There are 2 kinds of videos, imho:
- INDEX video, which is used to group and link towards videos
- SHOW video, which is a video linked by an INDEX video.

== INDEX video ==
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdqjOs7tPzE

== SHOW video ==
A SHOW video is a video which has:
- An INTRO ---> 10 seconds intro (first 5'' warning about Toggling Captions on + 5'' where captions can be added to redirect to other videos)
- The BODY ---> The video itself. The content
- An ENDING ---> 20 seconds of video at the end in order to place captions to other videos(same captions as in INTRO)

SHOW videos can be clasified as: Users, Testers, Developers, Translators, (any other?)
I've created different INTROs and ENDINGs for each of them. (I just have changed the colors).

You can find here the INTROS/ENDINGS:

- INTRO GREEN: http://youtu.be/K6-CC3loKY4
- ENDING GREEN: http://youtu.be/vXaZDL0fMI4

- INTRO BLUE: http://youtu.be/rswO8KcSlWA
- ENDING BLUE: http://youtu.be/E8jaCBZ74-w

- INTRO ORANGE: http://youtu.be/of9BAGUXpiA
- ENDING ORANGE: http://youtu.be/RTNMiBHDQvM

- INTRO RED: http://youtu.be/ynVJQe1OsTM
- ENDING RED: http://youtu.be/FggGCVJTIR0

- INTRO PURPLE: http://youtu.be/pe3zlGBcJ5A
- ENDING PURPLE: http://youtu.be/pVCl_m25fTg

Here a link to download all of them: http://vantalk.weebly.com/uploads/1/8/7 ... ndings.rar (4MB)

We should decide which colors fits each of the defined groups. <--- Vantalk idea is awesome. Let's use the colors of current banners rotators!!

Maybe you would want to use the same color as the signature you have on forum when posting? (Red for tester, green translator, blue user ?)
Should we use the intros and endings you provided for all videos? I don't know how to copy them into my video.

I will provide the .wmv videos of those Intros and Endings.
Basically you have just to place the Intro.wmv, your video, and then the Ending.wmv in your editor timeline.Drag and Drop.Just that :)
Which app sre you using to produce the video?

Vimeo uses H.264/AAC videos, so it is best to use them. Conversion from .wmv will lower the quality.
-uses Ubuntu+GNOME 3 GNU/Linux
-likes Free (as in freedom) and Open Source Detergents
-favors open source of Windows 10 under GPL2
