ROS code to learn about windows driver development?

Post by krishhh »

May I use ROS drivers code to understand windows internals and windows driver development? Does ROS drivers (storage drivers, crash dump) etc work under windows? I want to install ROS drivers in windows and observe windows behavior in debugger? Is it possible?

Thanks.

There is nothing to stop you from using the ReactOS source code to learn about how the NT model works - after all, this is one of the stated purposes of the GPL (Freedom 1). However, be aware that, since ReactOS is in an Alpha state right now, the code may not always be entirely "correct" in relation to the "real" Windows.

Hi Gobusto, thanks for the response. But I understand that nothing is stoping me as it is GPLed. My question was more from technical perspective. I meant will the source code in ROS run in windows? I may want to use it as reference to write my own drivers for windows?

One more question how does ROS handles the crashdump/hinbernation scenarios?

Thanks.

If you want to develop Windows drivers is better using MSDN information and kits.ReactOS will be as compatible as WIndows,so you(in a future) can develop your drivers using it,but sadly not now. Now we are testing Windows drivers in ReactOS (and other apps)to reach that objetive.

Krishhh, crash dumps and hibernation are not yet supported. BTW, you can go to #ReactOS IRC channel and talk with the developers there.

Because ReactOS is still in under heavy development (alpha stage) and is not ready for everyday use.

More information about the bug will be helpful.
Thanks.
Thank you for your interest in ReactOS! :)
