React OS Problem

Post by danielbarry »

I had a copy of non-genuine windows on my computer, and the time ran out. I then decided to upload React OS onto it, which worked perfectly when run in a virtual environment.
I then installed it onto my computer, instead of xp, as a main OS. When I load it up, it runs up until just after it displays the react OS logo, saying that there is a problem with the vga something, and then its address in RAM.
Can anyone help to get rid of the blue screen of death???

Thanks,
Dan

To do so we need more information which you can obtain this way: http://www.reactos.org/wiki/index.php/Debugging

And dont forget. ReactOS is by far not complete enough to be used as main OS. We wrote this in FAT Letter to the main Page to be sure ppl see it.
ReactOS is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes.

I think I have located the problem.

Theory:

I am running React OS on an old computer, without a graphics card. I take it that React OS can't use the on-board graphics card like XP, or Vista can. This is kind of supported by the fact the pdf cd case says that it has a graphics card requirements. I will find an old graphics card and try it anyway.

Thanks for your time...

ReactOS can use on-board graphics card. But there are some issues (http://www.reactos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5272). If you think that this problem is with the graphics device, try to rename or remove vbemp.sys file in reactos\system32\drivers\ directory, ReactOS then will use VGA mode. Another thing — ReactOS can only be booted from the first disk partition ("disk C:").

Good News,

I rebuilt 2 different pc's, and they both run it completely fine! I'm really impressed with it, as it was the 0.3.8 version, which is not yet built for normal pc use. I'm currently buiding one of them into a server with React OS as the main base of it, what server programs are supported by React OS?

By the way, does react os support wireless cards before I put one in?

Thanks for the help,

Dan

I don't think that wireless devices work yet. These two links seem to indicate that they do:

http://dreimer.dr.funpic.org/sblog/blog.php?id=9
http://www.reactos.org/archives/public/ ... 11506.html

But this is from http://www.reactos.org/wiki/index.php/S ... work_cards
MSI PC60G-F Wireless (Germany MSI) | Atheros AR5001 | Works | It installs and works using Windows XP/2000 driver. But ReactOS lacks wireless support so the card is not really usable. | Netzimme
EDIT: For the curious, you can find the current WLAN service code here: http://svn.reactos.org/svn/reactos/trun ... s/wlansvc/

I couldnt help but notice that the React OS screen shot shows a windows directory being used!?!? Is this beacuse the person is using the Windows features inside React OS, or just stuck React OS into a Windows Directory?

http://dreimer.dr.funpic.org/sblog/uplo ... pconfi.jpg

Either way, it seems as if the drivers only want to work if the directory of the drivers may be in the windows path. Could this be a problem in making React OS and Windows compatible in the future?

Surely if it looks for the drivers in the windows directory, and then can't find it, this might cause problems....

Thanks though,

Dan

Well that ReactOS screenshot comes from Lino PC. He is a cute guy who loves renaming folders, as Reactos->WINDOWS.(WINDOWS in capital letters)
So no, it is the folder inside Ros. :)
