Smaller than Windows

Post by tomleem »

I would be happy if it is smaller than the space Windows takes up. Have ROS be a lean mean operating system machine. 8)

yeah, it will be awesome have a react os with less of 50mb size (i think that can be posible if react os team don't starts ading retard useless icons everywhere like vista does and optimize the code and those things)

really react os is the greatest idea about free open source OS

compatible, free, has a lot of drivers, optimized, open source...

much better than linux option

although small is nice I would hope it swells with goodness and turns into a propper OS, not a mini-OS.

I hope or think, that ROS will be smaller than 50 or 100 MB, because ROS is only the kernel with the API (I think) and every user must know, what applications he/she want extra to install.

The ReactOS project is not trying to create a tiny OS, but a full OS capable of replacing Windows 2000/XP. Already a bootcd is 30MB, and ROS is still in alpha state; there is no shortage of new components to add and existing components to complete. Someone else might do a "Damn Small ReactOS" or whatever, but that would be a different project with different goals.

use UPX on all files.
dll/sys/exe it will shink with size of 30-50% each file
so 30MB = 30MB - 30% = 30MB - 9MB = 21MB

all file are compress then. and I do not think we will do that.

Most files on bootcd are already compressed (reactos.cab). I suppose it might be possible to compress the installed versions but that would probably cause bugs or other weirdness somewhere (debuggers?)

Another idea, two downloadable "versions" of ReactOS. For example:
-BASE: only the OS with his main components;
-ADVANCED: The BASE version plus other programs, like Firefox, OpenOffice, etc...

Obviously the ADVANCED version will be the bigger.
What do you think about this? (Sorry for my english, I'm Italian)

Any decision regarding bundling addition applications will not be made until we reach beta. You guys can discuss it all you want, but that's not going to change the timetable.

xD

is not a bad idea, do something like win vista

a basic version (very clean, no skins and shit like that)

an standard version (with normal use stuff like mediaplayer and those things)

and finally the ultimate version with lots of "useful" stuff

+ a program to clean react os like u want

Why make the mistake that Microsoft already made several times? (well, it's a matter of opinion, but the average consumer seems to be "confused" with all the different Vista versions, and the power-users replace (most of) the Microsoft components with their own favorite alternatives anyway).

I'm sure that when ReactOS is mature enough, different Distro's will be made containing bundled freeware. This would enable ReactOS to be bundled with applications that have different licenses as well (Free for Personal Use instead of GPL, etc.), and be more suitable for different cultures and environments. You can never make everybody happy, but most would be most happy with maximum freedom to choose.
