Two problems with ReactOS v0.2.5 Release

I'm testing the ReactOS v0.2.5 [LiveCD], in my two computers: the fist an "old" Pentium 200 Mhz w/64MB RAM - 8GB Hard Disk (all FAT32); and the second a "new" AMD Duron 945 Mhz, w/384MB - 80GB Hard Disk. In the "old" computer, when the CD starts the loading of the system, the following error appears (a blue window):

Code: Select all

An error occured in FreeLoader

That's the blue window (a lot of work carried me writing this screen exactly). This error also appears in the previous version (ROS v0.2.4), in this same machine. Now, in my other "new" computer, the CD seems to load OK. It reads the CD, but after asking me to "Hit any key to boot from CD...", the whole machine hangs-up in a blank black window. In this "new" computer, I've two partitions (the C:\ -> FAT32 ( with Windows 98 ); and E:\ -> NTFS ( with Windows 2000 ). The "old" computer has two partitions too, but the two partitions are FAT32. So, which is the problem?. Are they problems of my machines, or these are bugs of ReactOS?

If you need more information of anyone of my machines, write me here...

May it be a problem with big hard disks?
I don't know if ther is any known bug with them but as long as i have problems loading from CD (0.2.4 and also 0.2.5) with a computer with 80Gb disk (it's partitioned but there is still a big partition and two little) and it stops loading at disk.sys. Well, i can't really know if it stops. I suppose i have patient enough (if not how long does it take?? :?: ) It works with my computer whih has more HD but it is much more partitioned.
See if you can check it with less drive space :D
I let the experts the work to check if i'm wrong. :P

That sounds suspiciously like an error which was solved after the 0.2.5 release. Can you try with the latest SVN build? If you don't know how to create that let me know and I'll send you an .iso.

Results of the tests...

I'm really sorry for the long delay  (I was very busy these days)...

Well, let's go on... :)

Yesterday, I've been testing what you told me...

In the "new" computer, the problem was solved with one of the latest nightly builds. My new computer doesn't hang-up anymore at the startup (in a black screen). Now ReactOS works OK in my "new" computer (Thanks Jaix for the tip)...

But, in my "old" computer, the problem continues. But it isn't the same error. The blue screen doesn't appear anymore (as GvG said, it was solved). But now appears another error (very disconcerting). This is the error message:

Code: Select all

------------------------------
Failed to read the PVD.
Press any key
No active partition.
Press any key.
Error opening active (bootable) partition on boot drive 0xff for file access.
Error opening freeldr.ini or file not found.
You need to re-install FreeLoader.
Press any key to reboot.
------------------------------
The message says that there isn't an active partition, but that isn't true.
I don't know that's wrong now... It's a bug or another problem?...
(If you need more information about my PC, only ask me for that)
Any ideas?

Cheers! :)

P.S.: All was tested with 27st February nightly build.

Hmm, this means freeldr has trouble reading the CD. I'm not sure why though...

I don't know, but the CD Drive is a new LG 52X,
and it doesn't have any problems reading CDs...

I think that the problem neither comes from the CD, because
in my "new" computer, the same CD works very well indeed...

Another option?... :|

Well, I can't help to solve the problem, but I want to mention that I have some problems with booting from CD too.
Sometimes freeldr hangs while loading ReactOS. Then when I reburn the CD (RW) with the same image or try to boot several times, it boots correctly.
Running under Windows I have no problems to access the unbootable CD,
so the CD is fully readable in the CD drive.

Maybe there are problems with CD access / erro handling in freeldr or timing issues?!

LG CD/DVD does have problem reading cd-RW and DVD+R and DVD+RW disc. I have not try any LG-CD driver with DVD-RW disc

I'm not using a DVD-RW or CD-RW. I'm using simple CD-Drive with a simple CD-Recordable (not a CD-RW). And I really don't think that it can be a problem with the CD-Drive, because ReactOS works very well with the same CD-Drive in my "new" computer (I've tested it), and this CD-Drive doesn't have any problems reading CDs. And I record the CDs in another computer in my job, not with the "old" computer.
For me (IMHO), the problem is an incompatibility of FreeLoader with the BIOS of my old computer (but I don't know about it). Can be that?... (If you need more info of my computer, only ask for it).
Greetings... :)

Can you try with another CD-driver that are not LG
LG -CD / DVD driver are know not be 100% compatible with atapi.
and can not read some cd/dvd disc. LG-DVD driver are know have a cache problem in the hardware, so it hard geting sync with dvd movies with a certen hardware mpeg2 decoder card.

Mmmm, no. By the moment, I don't have any friends that have another CD-Drive to lend me (and I'm not going to change my CD-Drive only for this reason. The CD-Drive is semi-new).

Well, it's supposed to there be another option, for those who have this LG CD-Drive, no?...

What about making a bootable diskette that loads the Live-CD directly? (to avoid the problems in the LG CD-Drive). It's possible? (and how?)... This can be a solution, no?... :)
