Hi all I'm new here ,
I'm thinking about running ReactOS on my next PC and have a few questions hope someone can answer them..
1 What are the minimum system requirements?
2 Is there a basic like language especially designed and optimized for this OS?
3 Will most windows (XP) based programs run or will there be new programs developed?
4 Can it handle more then one harddrives?
5 When will it be safe to start using reactOS on an everyday basis?
Thanks.
Moving to ReactOS

First of all, note that this is in alpha. It is highly likely that you will be unable to install it or use it for all your needs. Windows or Linux with Wine would probably be a more realistic option. But to your questions...
1.
Pentum 200Mhz (or compatible)
32MB RAM
2MB VGA Graphics adapter (4MB SVGA recommended)
150MB Free disk space
CD-ROM Drive
2.
Language? I'm not sure what you mean, but I know C++ is often used for this OS.
3.
Some Windows XP programs will run now, though many programs have many issues running in ROS. Eventually, there will be complete support for Windows programs.
4.
I don't know. So far, AFAIK, it just supports one hard drive and one cd drive.
5. Maybe in 2008 ReactOS will be usable, but a final version 1.0 won't be out for years.

I h'm looking for a free OS and something not unix based so I ended up here.artguy10 wrote:First of all, note that this is in alpha. Thats nice to hear the specs are low!artguy10 wrote: 1.

Just a programming language that is optimized for this OS and easier to use then C like basic.artguy10 wrote: 2.

Cool! I saw that one of the ultimate goals was to run the complex program photoshop. Would be a nice accomplishment.artguy10 wrote: 3.

Ok, hope that changes in the near future.artguy10 wrote: 4.

Ouch, wasn't expecting to wait so long, then I might get Vista after all.artguy10 wrote: 5. Maybe in 2008 ReactOS will be usable, but a final version 1.0 won't be out for years.

It took five years for the OS powerhouse Microsoft to make Vista after making XP. And they already had XP to work off of.Atri wrote:Ouch, wasn't expecting to wait so long, then I might get Vista after all.

ReactOS doesn't have anything close to the funding or number of developers, plus we can't look at Microsoft code. We have to perfectly mimic another operating system from scratch. That is why it takes so long, but it really is a very short amount of time considering.
BTW: Don't get Vista. Buy XP. Vista has compatibility issues and non-stop security warnings, and all of its "innovations" are already found in Mac OS X or Linux. By the way, don't be afraid to look into Mac OS X or Linux. I love using Mac, and there are very cool distributions of Linux out there.

Infact, this should depend only on drivers.artguy10 wrote:2MB VGA Graphics adapter (4MB SVGA recommended)
If you have a standard VGA which run only in 640x480 at 16 colors and you have a good driver, then it should run again.
Of course, better hardware & drivers usually equal to easier life for the users.
Sincerely,
Carlo Bramini.

have a look at http://www.reactos.org/en/about_roadmap.html for an approximate time line, although I think even that is a bit optimistic.
software will not be specifically written for reactos only as any reactos software will also be windows software.
sorry, no good, free OSs available at the moment, you probably will have to get vista yet. reactos may be worth wild for general use before your next upgrade.
as reactos runs standard windows programs (although not very well at the moment) you can try any programing language you like but only C (and some C++) programs can form part of the OS if that is what you were trying to do. I have had some Delphi programs work, Delphi is easier than C if that is of any use to you.
you can try Reactos in something like VMware (a virtual machine) on your current computer safely if you just want a look.
for general use it is relay pretty useless at this stage but you can see it coming along.
