Cannot Remove ReactOS from my computer

Post by die fly3 » Thu Apr 11, 2013 1:27 pm

Hello everyone.

I am quite new to ReactOS, In fact I only installed it to complete one of my IT courses at school. I was amazed with the functionality of the operating system and the likeness to other more primary OS.

My Problem:
I cannot un-install / remove ReactOS 0.3.14 from my computer. I have tried booting other operating systems through the disc drive multiple times.

Details:
Once I have chosen to "boot from CDROM" some text pops up saying "Loading Freeloader". Then the screen disappears and the computer loads ReactOS like normal. I'm not sure whether this is part of the problem?

Help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

OK, so you put a Install CD into your PC, your MAIN PC with your Operating System (lets say Windows 7) and all private data on it. You installed ROS on the one and only HDD where Windows and your data is and then played with ROS. Now you want to boot to your former main OS again.

Do I get this right?

If so... Well, bad luck my friend. You just fully overwrote your Windows System + Boot Loader + Master Boot Record. Data is gone and you can reinstall your Windows from zero. With some luck you can recover your private files with some commercial recovery tools, like http://www.z-a-recovery.com/ or some free variants out there. There are dozen of free ones, but I have no experience with them. Maybe someone else could post a good one.

If I got this wrong and your PC just does not boot from CD anymore, try setting cdrom as primary boot device in BIOS

ReactOS is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes.

Well..if "boot from CdRoM" is choosen and it tries to install Freeloader, it means that you have the ReactOS CD-ROM still in your CD reader.
This can happen if you have the boot sequence as: CDROM and then Harddisk.
First remove the ReactOS CD-ROM from the CD drive.
Now retry to run again your computer.
If it keeps booting ReactOS, then basically, as Daniel said, you've formated the Harddisk and installed ReactOS on top.Instead you should have installed ReactOS in parallel to the other OSes or even better installing ReactOS inside VirtualBox.
Did you follow the steps your IT teacher told you?

No :) Thankfully I don't give two ****'s about lost data on my computer as I bought it from my school's fete.
(It had to be completely wiped for security reasons anyway...) :D

What I did originally was install Linux onto it.
I didn't like it. So I tried ReactOS, also to complete my course.
My problem is now that I cannot remove it from my computer.

I just need to know how to completely remove ReactOS from my computer.
My goal is to get my computer running again on a different operating system.

Cheers

So this means I have just wasted a bought computer because I'm a massive noob? :D
Is there ANY way to put another OS (any operating system) onto the computer?

Hmmm...odd..
Well basically do the following:
-Insert the CDROM of any other OS you are willing to install.
-Go to your Bios and check the "Startup sequence", this is the sequence that BIOS is going to follow to try to load the OS. Right now I bet it is as: Harddisk, CDROM. (It means it checks first the harddisk, if it finds an OS it tries to load it. If there isnt an OS in the harddisk installed then it tries to find a bootable cdrom to install one).
You need to change it to: CDROM, Harddisk(This means that the BIOS will try to check first if there is an OS in the CDROM, if not, it will try with Harddisk)
Once you are sure that you have CDROM, HARDDISK sequence, just place a CDROM with any OS inside, and voila...install it.

I'm in the process of gaining access to the BIOS.
Once done I will select CD as my first boot device.
I will post results soon.

Thanks for the help so far!

I have reset the bios access password, allowing me to change the
boot sequence to CDROM as 1st, Hard drive as 2nd.

I was about to start cheering because I thought I would be out of this mess....
But then while loading the CDROM I got this message:

"Cannot boot from CD - code 5"

Does this mean I have written the disc wrong?
Do I need to try again?
Are there any other recommended OS that I can download, burn to a disc and try to install?

Which kind of CD did you place into the CD-ROM drive?
Windows is a nice OS you may try.
Also there is one called Haiku.
Ubuntu...
And Trolololo is another cool one, iirc.

Hi, die fly3. Thanks for trying ReactOS.

Did a quick Google search, came up with this:
Exotic Hadron wrote:...seems to be a defect of MSI and ASRock BIOSes for years...
Are you using an MSI or ASRock motherboard? Check the msdn link - the poster made a link with steps to try for this issue. I have not looked into this at all. Let us know if it works.

You can try to make it quiet by booting to a gparted Linux cd. They always booted for me. It will help you to fully wipe all data from HDD and thus make it look new to any other cd. If its a BIOS Problem, then I faer I am out of ideas for now, too. Anyways, it installed fine at the beginning, when you tested ROS; right? So something changed to make it not work at all... just what

If you have USB ports, install Windows from a usb stick, its easy to do, you just need a disk image of the operating system you want and search for some really easy tutorials on the net

Has the computer got a floppy drive, if so, have you got a windows start floppy. If so, then use fdisk and delete the partition(s), then create a new partition. You should now (if the bios boots the cdrom) be able to install another os.
Please keep the Windows classic (9x/2000) look and feel.
The layman's guides to - debugging - bug reporting - compiling - with some complementary scripts.
They may help you with a problem, so do have a look at them.

What I know about my computer...
It has:
  • 1 disc tray
    6 USB slots (2 front, 4 back)
It doesn't have:
  • Floppy Drive (oldman)

I'm not sure what type of motherboard I have.

Thanks for the help so far!
The only problem I am having is getting past the "BOOT DISC ERROR CODE 5".
I will do some research myself, but if anyone here knows why this would be happening
or how to fix it, your input would be greatly appreciated.

jonaspm - I will try the USB boot if I have time.
vicmarcal - I used DVD-R discs, I have tried burning them at different speeds.
16x and 6x, neither seem to work.
milon - You're welcome. I think it's great, I'm just getting a bit scared now that I can't
remove it. If all turns out okay I will be using it again and I will recommend it
to my friends.

It's fairly easy to determine what brand your motherboard is. You usually have to take a few screws out of the case to open it. Then just look at the motherboard. The brand will be labelled on it somewhere and shouldn't be hard to find.

The link below gives a fairly straight-forward solution for the problem. Just be aware that the page contains a few NSFW ads. If you care, you can block them by using Adblock Plus with a custom filter:
