Via C7 1.0GHz MiniITX hang

Post by ozzumud »

Hi, I've had this mini box for a while. Evertime a new ReactOS is out I give it a go... never having any success I figured I'd ask here if I should jus give up :P

This is the board that is in it:

http://www.surplusgizmos.com/Mini-ITX-M ... _1996.html

I've had loads of fun with it and different versions of windows/dos/linux/os2

With the current and latest debug builds (0.3.14 live & livecd-55938-dbg) both hang when they get to:

multi(0)\disk(0)\cdrom(31)\reactos\System32\Drivers\NDIS.SYS

I have disabled everything in the bios that wasn't absolutely nessacery to boot (NIC, AC97, serial, parallel, etc)

It has 2 sata drives in IDE mode, 1TB Hitachi and an ASUS shorty multi-drive CD, PS/2 keyboard & mouse, monitor.

Nothing real special about it, basically a bench build in a micro case.

Tried since:
reactos0.2.6-REL-iso.zip
reactos0.3.0-REL-live.zip (this is about when I got the MiniITX board)
ReactOS-0.3.3-RC1-iso.zip
ReactOS-0.3.4-REL-iso.zip
ReactOS-0.3.7-REL-iso.zip
ReactOS-0.3.13-REL-iso.zip
ReactOS-0.3.14-REL-live.zip

reactos0.2.6-REL-qemu.zip got me hooked... but would really like to see this on real hardware :)

Given our interests to see ReactOS used in embedded environments we would be grateful if you could perform some further investigations for us. Follow the links in my signature to find out more about filing Bugzilla reports and debugging.

I searchd bugzilla for "IopCreateArcNames failed" and found:

So, i grabbed uniata.sys from livecd-51735-dbg.7z and popped it into the 3.14 live release... and niceness... Desktop :)

So... should I add my motherboard to that bug or ???

ok hto, added my comments to the bug.

and yes vicmarcal, looks like uniata.sys is my issue, because replacing it with an older version allows the live cd from either 3.1.4 or latest (55938) to boot with live discs.

Well, fun stuff... got a reply that this bug was "Fixed for now by r55958"

So I downloaded livecd-55963-dbg.iso and sure enough... went past the 1st problem and into another...

USBHI_CreateUsbDevice: failed to create usb device...

OK.. not using any usb devices except for my internal card reader, disabled ALL USB in BIOS...

reboot...

IO1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED

STOP: 0x00000069 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

this pointed to:

http://www.reactos.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=5751

Leads back to uniata.sys ...

BTW, I read that ReactOS will only install to IDE drives/IDE CD... This motherboard has SATA but set to IDE mode in BIOS... does that count? I no longer own any IDE hard disks to test with, MAYBE an IDE CD Floating around, Although I could only bench test that as my case wont allow a full length CD drive. And I have an adapter I use in XBOX originals to conver a SATA drive to IDE for the hard disk if my IDE mode SATA in bios is unacceptable.

In this case IDE refers to the way the OS talks to the controller. IDE used to be a standard that all motherboards implemented so OSes would usually only need one single driver. All SATA controllers have completely different ways of talking with the OS, so each one needs it's own drivers - unless it can be set to "IDE" compatible, in which case it looks like an IDE controller to the OS and can use a standard IDE driver.

The physical interface is largely irrelevant to the OS. It is possible to attach SATA drives to IDE controllers with an adapter and the OS has no way of knowing the difference.

BTW, the UniATA driver that ReactOS uses does recognize some SATA controllers - but not many of them.

It would be nice if ReactOS could load third party drivers, but the ones I have tried haven't worked.

I'm afraid there hasn't been any development activity in UniATA for ages. I wouldn't expect any changes any time soon. And there are piles of bugs in it that need to be addressed.

At any rate, I have successfully used hard drives attached to a VIA 6421 SATA controller - but I had noted some issues booting from a CD (but I wasn't sure if it was the controller or the drive itself that was the issue).
