Selling Consulting

Many Open Source software projects are funded by consulting. This seems to be a great model particularly for server side or web based applications such as database management or forum software. Many companies will willingly shell out money to have an expert on hand to answer questions.

Question 1.)

Code: Select all

if ( ReactOS is 100% done. ) {

	What kind of Consulting businesses could be created, that Microsoft consulting
	can't do better or won't do at all?
}

Question 2.)

Database and forum softwares could be described as management of massive amount of user data.
ReactOS does not. Does that mean that the Consulting activities around ReactOS will be much less than for managing databases?

1)"Our Consulting could be Support. "

As one smart guy said:
" Money isnt in the new stuff but in the maintenance and in addons"
-New stuff is paied once,but the maintenance is paied always.
-Addons are usually more expensive than the gadget itself,look the Wii or Mobiles ;)

2)
That book is talking in a general way,you have to try to find the correct bussiness. We arent a Database software neither a Forum software,but it doesnt mean we can have similar way of bussiness. Just search "Canonical" .

Ignore this post!

I just wanted to scribble down something for future personal reference that might be useful to ROS in 10-20 years time.
My mind just got hit by a flash of an idea for a self sustaining monetary ecosystem that I think might work in the future like 2030 ;)

Send notes to future self.
Magic Cauldron - Manufacturing Delusion

non-technical peoples, ubuntuforums.org model, callcenter, dumping ground, vårdcentralens telefonsupportrar (sjuksköterskor), handshake, clients, avtal, jurister, Microsoft 600 kr/minuten (rykte?).
If (as is generally accepted) over 75% of a typical software project's life-cycle costs will be in maintenance and debugging and extensions, then the common price policy of charging a high fixed purchase price and relatively low or zero support fees is bound to lead to results that serve all parties poorly.

Consumers lose because, even though software is a service industry, the incentives in the factory model all work against a vendor's offering competent service. If the vendor's money comes from selling bits, most effort will go into making bits and shoving them out the door; the help desk, not a profit center, will become a dumping ground for the least effective employees and get only enough resources to avoid actively alienating a critical number of customers.
