Icon design info

Post by Weasel, the Geek » Thu Nov 13, 2008 12:45 am

Being my first post here, I want to say hi to everybody. So... hi everybody!

And now the (uninteresting) on-topic part. I would like to know for what sizes and color modes should the system icons be designed. Also, is there a color palette that I can use? Any additional tips together with the requested information would be highly appreciated.

I really like the idea of ReactOS, but it lacks on the graphics side, so I will try to help by creating a set of icons. I can't guarantee better icons, but I can only promise that I'll try to do my best. Cheers!

Hi and welcome,

ReactOS grabs most of its icons from the Tango Desktop project, so I'd suggest you take a look at their Icon Theme Guidelines, hope this helps  .

Thanks, gabrielilardi. But which sizes does ReactOS use? I suppose 32x32, 24x24 and 16x16, as you try to replicate as much as you can from Windows...

We should use the same sizes Windows uses. So let's say 48x48, 32x32, 24x24, and 16x16, you can check the icons out in the sources under the res folders, ie for shell32.

Hi Weasel,

feel free to join us on IRC, http://www.reactos.org/en/community_irc.html . Mf, the resident graphics person, isn't particularly active on the channel, but you can try buzzing him for his thoughts =)

Hi Weasel,

as gabrielilardi said, please follow the Tango Desktop Project Guidelines, but I would like to add one more information, please create, whenever possible, the icons in a scalable and open format (e.g. svg) so that we can create different resolutions and altered versions.

Basically we need 32x32, 24x24 and 16x16, but if you create a svg, it's not need to worry about the resolution because you can create any resolution on request very easily. To start download the tango project package and start from the "scalable" directory, so you have alterable svg-templates. If you don't have commit access then submit your icons via bugzilla (svg files only). If you want to know what icons are recently made in this way you can find them here.

The problem is that I only work with Photoshop and The GIMP. Unfortunately, I haven't yet worked with vector images creation software.

If you work with Photoshop and The Gimp I don't think you'll find hard to work with Inksape, take a look at these tutorials.

and me. Instead, I work with flash, which I find easier than Inkscape. Though, Wine doesn't support Flash CS3 yet without winetricks.

Yes... although bear in mind that windows vista uses much bigger sizes - the icons should have vector version for this reason, especially if reactos ever has a built in "vista game explorer".
