Folded paper? Well, here's a quick draw. (Could be improved.)

No no no. Folded paper as a compressed file (for the .rar extension maybe :) ). Does it work in your head, do you "see" it ?
Edit: I guess it would have to be based on the file icon, if that one will look like a sheet of paper. Folded in two, four or something. Your idea is good, I think, but it looks like a file that is logically double in size, i.e. larger instead of smaller :)

Interesting new ideas here...
mf's Harddrive icon looks really really (really, really...) good
My weakness is that I'm thinking sometimes too complicated. It's too much for icon set.
I think I have to invest more time per icon and release max only 2-3 icons per week and only make one if I think I have a really good idea. It makes ~10 icons per month. Artguy's and mf's icons added we can finish the icon set this year. And when we get more good designers, it can be even faster.

Mf, I can try to vectorize your icons. I think, I'm good on it. I need a lot of time, but i can do. Additionally Inkscape is getting better and better, so I can work more and more efficient. The blur filter was one of the most important milestones. Has anybody read about the new functionality of Inkscape 0.46 and the roadmap of Inkscape? Just amazing.
That Photoshop simply won't want to anti-alias any curves
Gimp/Gimpshop does ;)
The only thing I miss in Gimp is the healing brush. Gimp has a powerful tool named SIOX for cutting out objects. I encourage you to try, it could be something for you.
EDIT: would a punch card be associated with executable at once?
No.
Some icon sets simply have two opposing triangles pointing at each other on top of the regular icon of any compressed item.
I know these triangles are used for diff files in kde, no archives. There are differences between two files in it.

Yeah, no offence but I think the camera icons posted here look better and also more adequate. Digital cameras that look like in your picture exist, I know, but the ones like the candidates are more common.

It looks like harddrive and floppy on small sizes.

So let's say you only see the front of the floppy drive, and the hole where the disk goes in is black. Howzat?

Hey, guys. Re the floppy icons, there should be more contrast between the colors used. And the perspective should be something like a little more vertical and less horizontal, imo. Also, remove the drive slot (it isn't needed). That drive, plus the top part of it, modified, though, could be used for a drive in general.

ROSFan, that camera looks really nice. It is very realistic, especially at larger sizes. However, I don't think it would be very usable at small sizes; perhaps it could be in some sort of camera set-up wizard?

And about Inkscape, I use a 0.46 dev version on my Mac. It is very nice, and I like the ability to morph shapes, and the calligraphy changes are nice, too.

It's badly colored (why gold?) and way too curved for my tastes.

This camera should become a costly camera, not this cheap flat crap which only understands lossy jpeg and avi. That's why I made this design. Most of such cameras i found are curvy. I looked on 5 different professional camera images while making it. But it seems, the most users are accustomed too see the cheap camera design. I conclude, my icon could be used for example in programs converting raw to tiff.

Maybe white instead of gold would be better.
