Who's defending vista? I'm sure not.

I just want a tearing-free environment. I'd like to watch video clips on web pages without tearing. I'd like to be able to move windows around without it tasking the main cpu.

Vista is a horrible resource hog--simply awful, and Microsoft really has no excuse.

hi
tip get vlite
vLite is a tool for customizing the Windows Vista installation before actually installing it.

Main features are:

* remove components
* integrate drivers
* split/merge Vista installation CDs into a single image
* apply tweaks
* make bootable CD/DVD

Windows Vista from Microsoft takes a lot of resources, we all know that. vLite provides you with an easy removal of the unwanted components in order to make Vista run faster and to your liking.

This tool doesn't use any kind of hacking, all files and registry entries are protected as they would be if you install the unedited version only with the changes you select.

It configures the installation directly before the installation, meaning you'll have to remake the ISO and reinstall it. This method is much cleaner, not to mention easier and more logical than doing it after installation on every reinstall.

Nice! vlite sounds a little like a couple of utilities from LightPC(or something close.), called 98lite and XPlite. I use those utilities to utterly destroy Internet Explorer and other MS stuff...

porting features from Vista to XP seems like the new trend hehe.. but there are some very interesting WIP like these:

http://www.fromvistatoxp.com/ - they plan to make Vista-only software work in XP (and server 2003) and so far, the sidebar seems to be working fine

http://www.windowsxlive.net/?p=635 - these guys are implementing the start menu from vista... and also, an alternative to Vystal (the link in my previous post), so the windows can get the glassy effects without windows blinds..

not to mention the interest of adding DX10 compatibility in WINE (which helps ROS almost directly, and since microsoft won't make a DX10 for XP, this would be the only option)

I'm not saying any of this things must be added to ROS, but after getting compatible with XP, the next step would be vista, right?... and for those looking for the eye candies, there are options too

PS: also, for expose in windows, there are many good (free and commercial) options, like

http://www.autohotkey.com/forum/topic13001.html - An AHK script, also as an exe here: http://www.megaupload.com/pt/?d=H06JC52G (to activate use Win key + TAB)

http://www.matiasmoreno.com.ar/winexpose/ - good clone with some bugs, and is going to be open sourced as soon as the author finishes converting the code from Delphi to C

http://www.otakusoftware.com/topdesk/ - Commercial clone, but also has a Flip3D option

these should all work when ROS is advanced enough

Phobos, why don't we involve 3rd party shell developers to extend/expand the ROS explorer ?
Or, at least, why don't we inform them about ROS asking to test their works under it ?

More developers > fast growing > more fun !

In other words: spread the "ReactOS' verb" to anyone and anywhere !
(note: but do NOT spam)

I personally still like running Win31's progman.exe just because I thought it was kind of easy, especially when it was NT 3.51. Stable and old, my favorite combo. ET phone home, NT 3.51 stay shut up. :) I more boring than you! Ohhhh! Yeah! WINE has a crappy clone of progman.exe, all I need is the source....

have you tried here? http://www.aeroxp.org/board/index.php?showtopic=7728

read the post and the documentation for a little more instructions

(btw, here is a list of vistas's software that is working using their VAIOXP http://www.fromvistatoxp.com/status/)

and, @ forart, I could try to contact these people, but I believe ROS is not yet at the point of making a fancy interface just yet... anyone can try their works by themselves, but as many of the calls these programs make are not implemented, they wont work... some time in the future, they are expected to work as they do on XP, but we're not there yet

I guess I am a little before the trend. When some of these utilities had started, I had already ported the BSoD from and to Vista! :) hehe...

A new finding: (babelfished) mtate2 :shock:
[ external image ][ external image ]

* Hardware requirement

This software operates with Windows 95/ 98/ 98SE/ 2000 /Me /XP.

Furthermore, with Windows NT it does not operate.

*In the latest edition it reached the point where it can utilize even with theme of WindowsXP standard.
This guy should be involved, definetly.

i don't particularly that program's approach to windows on the desktop.
so far, the thing i like about aero is its flip 3d and everything else, i would prefer a more berylesque implementation.

ultimately it boils down to nice windowing effects, transparency, translucency and something like flip3d. i would prefer a opengl approach so it could be carried to other systems (or heck, pull a vista move and use reactx to call to opengl ;-) )--but i guess it doesn't really enter in to debate because the devs prefer little wandering from the way MS has chosen to implement things.

My favorite joke I used to play on my friend before Vista came out( and still do...) is Flip2D. Press (I think...) shift+CTRL+down. The screen inverts! :shock: :D
