I want to help! Let's make it look newer...

Post by Reactions »

Hi all,
I am a graphics designer that wants to make ReactOS look better. I tried reaching out to the developers, but never got a response in trying to become a graphics designer. I think that if we want to attract more people, then we need to improve the design as well as the software. Do you all think I should be a lead graphics designer? I can make wallpapers, icons, logos, and more for free.

We fans of ReactOS always love a good wallpaper, so I won't say no to that.

The beauty of an open source project is that you're free to create and share whatever you'd like, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it is going to end up included in the official builds.

And as for "Lead Graphic Designer", well... I don't know about that. Do you have a portfolio or any work you can show off?

For reference, here's my collection of the 'unofficial' ReactOS wallpapers that have been linked to from this forum: http://reactos.exceedindustries.net/wal ... category/1

And, if you'd like to dive into creating something really exciting, here's the source for the themes that are currently included in ROS: https://github.com/reactos/reactos/tree ... dia/themes If you could create a unique and well-designed theme, I'm sure people would support it for inclusion.

We can ALL make wallpapers, icons and logos.

ReactOS does not need a new look per se: in fact a new look and feel is the least of ReactOS requirements at the moment but go ahead and create them just as you would for Windows. If anyone likes them then they may consider using them.

Yws, of course, but shouldn't there be someone in charge of doing it?

Well... not really, I have made two 4k icons so far, but didn't want to spend too much time on it if no one is actually going to implement them, you know. If you want, I can upload the icons.

What's a 4k icon? I'd like to see what they look like.

At first, thanks for your offer. In the past there were many people who offered some artwork and much of it looked really good. The problem of the thing was that a good look at least depend on consistency. Reactos has several 100 icons for example, + many images and to simply create a good looking theme it takes several months of work. That everything has to fit together and must be complete. This is where all started projects failed until now.
I personally would really appreciate a new look, especially because I don't like the tango look which looks 90's like.

If you really want to work on it, take one of our two bundled themes (lautus and modern) as a base and create the other artwork around it (icons, images, wallpapers) to create a consistent look'n'feel. Caution: this is just my personal opinion!

Check the dlls in system 32 directory with a resource editor (all of them) to get an idea how much artwork is needed.

I did work on icons in the past but real-life steals all my time now. I worked hand in hand with Jared Smudde who is still active and I am sure he will help you in case of any related questions. Just enter the chat.

I wish you the best of luck and I am looking forward to a new modern reactos.

No-one is in charge of anything really. You can contribute and then we'll see what we think of your work and if it so much fantastically better than the current work then the consensus might say "yes we'll have it". IF not then you will be creating yet another theme. Being in charge means you imposing your will and that is not wanted.

If I was 'in charge' then you'd be working on a steampunk system whether you liked it or not.

By all means create a theme.

Looks pretty cool, I will keep working on my own one. It's going to be similar to Windows 10, but different and have better support for 8k displays. This will make it future proof for a while. However, it would require a beefier system.

Does your actual computer (hardware) have a similar steampunk look?

Use proper image hosting (i.e. imgur.com), not Google Drive.

The widgets and icons displayed on his screens are all those that I created myself, so yes, everything on screen is mine. However, with regard to the hardware, with the number of systems I develop on it would be excessive to apply a steampunk conversion to each. On one of my earlier Acer 7720G laptops the laptop base was clad in leather (which was a kinky little number) but my systems don't tend to last long as I don't treat them well. They certainly don't last long enough to take a full re-work and as you know laptops don't take to customisation.
