Ok, everyone is speaking about the shell, shell replacements, windows skinning, etc.
But what about the file manager ?
Needless to say it's one of the most important part of an OS feel.
Windows is not really known for the quality of its file manager (when you copy/paste several huge files under windows, you don't even have correct time estimation for the copy process by example, which files are actually being copied, etc.). I hope ReactOS will be.
There are probrably some improvements and USEFUL additional functionalities which could be implemented, see by example those commercial applications :
Directory Opus http://www.gpsoft.com.au/ (See this review by example, it gives a few ideas : http://www.itnews.org.uk/w_articles/w_r ... _DOpus.cfm )
Xplorer2 http://zabkat.com/
Filter for file selections, file splitting, directory synchronizing, search tools, two folders views, etc., could be added as advanced options in the file manager without troubling the unexperienced user. What do you think ?
File manager replacement ?

First I must say that I like the Windows file manager. It feels easy to work with, and very clean.
I agree the time estimate is not always the best, but it do say which files are being copied at the moment.
And a few more features wouldn't hurt I guess.., but!
I just took a look at Directory Opus, and it feels very... cluttered..

If you're worried about file copying, you might find PerigeeCopy useful. It's GPL, btw.
IMHO what ReactOS really needs (and standard Windows lacks) is two-panel filemanager. Midnight Commander file manager comes with ROS. But I like filemanagers with Windows interface like TotalCommander because they are good explorer replacement (in meaning of file management).
BTW, there is a very good replacement for MC called NDN. It is based on source code of very popular in ex-USSR Dos Navigator filemanager. There are Windows, Linux and DOS versions. I think that it is the best console mode filemanager. I didn't test it in ROS yet but hope it will work.

don't scare the people switching from windows to ros... even though i hate the overall shell workings of windows i still think they did right with the file manager. i think the best alternative file manager i've seen (for windows that is) is xplorer2. it's not too far from the look feel and usability of the native windows fileman, but has lots of extra features and common sense (i figured if i clicked on this it would let me do this) stuff that just should be in windows but isn't.

I agree on the fact that something like Directory Opus is cluterred (though to be true you can reconfigure the whole interface) and may frighten some new user, while Xplorer2 is more Windows friendly.
I was not thinking of adding so many things anyway, at least not many visible (put everything in an advanced menu). Remember that when ReactOS will be 1.0, its competitor won't be Windows XP file manager, but Windows Vista file manager, which is more advanced.
At first I'd be satisfied even with only a standalone file manager.
At least don't try to do everything (shell + file manager) in the same exe, because this will prevent development of alternative file managers and shells for ReactOS. For the moment if you want to develop an alternative shell for ReactOS you need to develop an alternative file manager too... In my opinion this could be damageable to the advancement of the project.
And if ROS explorer crashes due to an error on file management, the whole desktop is down (same thing with explorer.exe under windows by default, but Microsoft has decided to stop that in Vista).

thanks, exactly. the problem isn't a douple pane manager- some people really like them - i remember when they were really popular in dos (and i love dos) so i can sympathise.uriox wrote:I was not thinking of adding so many things anyway, at least not many visible (put everything in an advanced menu)
the problem is with people changing defaults. everytime MS comes out with a new thing they change everything at once and all by default- ugh. so you have to spend weeks learning how to turn off features back to the old way before years later some grow on you.
put an option under advanced: "[ ] double pane file windows" and leave it off so when the windows person says "oh sure they made a free windows, i bet it's all WEIRD and stupid" they don't open ros and say "hey, wth is this?!"
i'm not saying douple pane is stupid- at all... but they will. personally i've always found a second pane distracting. or as someone else said: cluttered. eh. you have your solution to both issues so everyone's happy. personalize ros and add features to advanced but leave the default settings for people who don't know how.

a second panel should be an option as well, but not standard... that would scare the none-power-users of windows to much i think...temarez wrote:IMHO what ReactOS really needs (and standard Windows lacks) is two-panel filemanager.
