That has nothing to do with user mode versus kernel mode, it has to do with software versus hardware.vanguard wrote:moving the UI to the Graphics card for it to deal with and not the OS.

Indeed-- and has very little if anything to do with overall Ergonomics of UI design. That is more the technical end. The user isnt going to care that windows are drawn using 2-triangle primatives using the Video hardware's rasterization features--- VS being done in additive/subtractive software surfaces. (Even though the former allows for more eye candy, in a MUCH MUCH faster way)
UI design issues are more along the lines of-- How do you start programs? How do you navigate to files and folders? How do you manipulate windows? Etc.. Etc.. Etc...
I could theoretically draw a UI layout concept as litteral concept art on paper. The actual implementation of said concept then transends UI design, as that then becomes implementation.
Example-- Architect says it needs to be a stone wall---- Is it made with portland cement? Fitted blocks that dont need mortar? Or is it carved from a solid chunk? those are all different Implementations of the concept of the stone wall.
Simmilar to the UI. You could have the vectorized window elements, and have it look exactly like the classic interface on the surface. That is entirely an implementation difference, not a UI design difference.

yeah i've already got my way, so i don't need to spend any time on how my reasons are the same on this.ged wrote:no doubt these threads will go on and on though, even though a decision has aready been made.
and most people that talk about alternative shells know the ones that exist... and the really odd thing is that you don't have to know a byte of windows coding to make skins for those.
you can make your designs happen for yourself and for other people, vanguard. and you can run them on reactos (in time) and on windows. download litestep and learn how to skin. then you can show off your usable working designs for both platforms, and maybe get them to work on linux in addition! good luck. and send us a link to it- i'll even check the bin.

Well, try to get some inspiration from SkyOS (really great graphics, clean, modern and understandable) & MenuetOS 32 (cool menus).vanguard wrote:This is my first attempt.

Actually I have been experimenting with UI designs. I will submit a preview of the design and various variations I have come with a little later.
edit: Right http://www.jatos.co.uk/reactforum.jpg - what does everything think of that? For my next trick making it so that people can actually use it.

try that link
I am thinking of changing the actual colour the buttons and removing the bevel on the toolbar and sroolbar background, replacing the devels with a slight gradient background.

Arrgh the blasted host is down by the looks, give me a little while and I will get onto the hosts back. In the meantime I will put elsewhere, hopefully the link will work after this.

"assume imo on everything" - great quote.
love it, love the bottom [task]bar except for the go button and love the win gui except the blue [title]bar.jatos wrote:http://www.jatos2.co.uk/reactforum.jpg

obviously this is mostly bc i can't stand the xp look, but until everyone loves vista i guess i can't complain about it looking like windows... the blue bar can be lived with and the green button not so bad! main complaint about go is not the button (like how it's shorter, nice.) but the font. the font on the go button needs work. love the bevels everywhere, but i bet you'll lose them due to many complaints. i think yours is still better than the "real" xp, so hey! nice work... one usability issue someone brought up- always thought the _ [] x in 98 were fine: in xp they got enormous and silly but at least are easy to click. still, making them smaller than in 98 makes them hard to click on. yours slightly taller than 98 (good look.) but also not quite as wide... just a thought. so annoying to click X when you meant to click "max"
