New Subsystem Ideas

Post by DocPheniX »

just wondering what subsystems you would like to see for reactos?

some of the subsystems i would like to see implemented for ros after the w32 api is completed are as follows in this order.

BSD subsystem (openBSD, FreeBSD, and netBSD binary emulation)

win16 and dos subsystem (idealisticly these could be combined into one subsystem)

BeOs subsystem (just for giggles as this is one of my fav alternate os's)

what are your thoughts? (amiga emu, atari emu, etc)
/me waits for responses

Would love to see a DOS subsystem. That's number 1 for me

The prioritary subsystems for me are:
1- Linux/Unix
2- Dos
3- OS2
4- BSD (but with linux subsystem we can recompile the app froms it and use)
5- Maybe anyother like BeOS, QNX, Amiga, SKYOS, etc...

I'm always a bit surprised by this. Isn't there already a fine OSS solution to run Linux programs called "Linux"?

gvg and there is also a OSS called windows, and os/2 and BeOS, but not a system that runn all the apps
and if colinux work under ros we will have the same support that windwos to those apps, so we will have a 'subsystem' to it.

for me dos, win16 and linux subsystems would be very useful.

For Linux CoLinux could be used, and for Dos DosBox (it's running much dos apps already, only bad thing is the speed (some newer protected mode games, like Tomb Raider, are running slow in it ))
But for win16 I think a subsystem like in windows NT4+ has to be created.

I like the idea to run unix/linux apps in ROS  POSIX

I am not shure if dos-box is a good alternative for a DOS subsystem, because it runs too slow at the moment (in my opinion).

I was pretty interested in that project some time ago before they went commercial.... but you say "some apps". Are there any plans to extend the Skyos api for ReactOS?

Better than use DosBOX is use a freedos based subsystem, it will be work better maybe... and it also an opensource project.

just had another idea for a subsystem. :) Irix emulation layer. .. it would be pretty slow .. unles reactos was ported to sgi hardware and the irix layer was just a subsystem

This is like FS support, it'll all probably come as people with developing skills come to see the worth of using ROS as a greater value then the effort of making a subsystem/FS driver for their platform/disks.

Coming on, coming up, let me help ROS and I'll be able to look @ a life well used.

No, AFAIK OSS means "OpenSource Software". What you ment, is "OS" meaning "Operating System"!
Where do you want ReactOS to go today ?

I like Windows 16 bit / DOS support .
ReactOS is a windows clone,
so i think it should support Windows 16bit too.
( i think wine does support 16bit windows progs)

And when Windows subsystems are finished... others are nice too.
Linux, BeOS, SkyOS !! ... an OS that can run any program written for any OS !!! ... :D:D:D
