I don't like the ROS shell too.

Check out the 'Shell' section in the Untested (open source) software list : System wiki page.

SharpEnvironment would be great (in my opinion) !
SharpE is a shell replacement for Win2k/XP which is developed in Delphi 6. The goal of the SharpE project is to create a fast, stable and very graphical shell with lots of configuration options. Lowdimension International was founded by Lowspirit and Langor in 1997 and now has over 12 members. The project is opensource and most of the code is available under the LGPL license, at our Sourceforge Project Page.

An explorer replacement is nessicary. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean people don't use it and want it to look nice. This project allow people to work on what they want, and if someone wants to work on the explorer, more power to them. I use explorer and I don't want it's quality development to be stifled because you don't like to use it. So feel free to use what ever you want, but I think it's a waste of time to hold the "we don't need an explorere replacement because there's XXXX shell replacement out there" discussion.

So there!

Just for the record, I don't have any problem with the current ROSexplorer per se.

I trust the dev team to "ship" ROS with an explorer alternative (Since it cannot ship with any REAL MS Explorer, what ever it does ship with will be MS Expolorer Alternative.) that faithfully fills the bill.

But I would like to see a control panel (for want of a better word) that will allow different DTE Shell environments.

I also think that DTE development should be the last phase of the project with all other OS work completed.

That's my opinion and I'm stickin' too it. :D

Sorry Major problem with SharpE

Number one The complier Pascal.

Not part of the Gcc set. So a extra dependancy.

The icons are usable.

Time is on ourside. Gnome might be portable by the time we are ready.(This will only require Gcc to build but be large.

Not likely

Post by Alkali »

Actually I think Xming is a very good idea. However, I have read enough discusions along these lines to know the developer response is likely to be "we are making a clone of windows, and windows comes with explorer not X windows".

Xming could be installed by the user, or be the defalt graphical system on a distro . . .

And where is the explorer?

In \ReactOS\explorer.exe in the installed version, in reactos/subsys/system/explorer in the source tree.

I meant in Xming. I was saying we still need the work on the current explorer.

Xming is another concept.
Xming is the port of the X Window System to Microsoft Windows. Unlike Cygwin/X it does not depend on the Cygwin environment.
So you can use different windowing systems.

I don't think is a good idea to 'reinvent the wheel':

Litestep
BEOSWin
DarkStep
Blackbox for Windows
SharpE
Serenade
xoblite
GeoShell

Why would they develop ReactOS then ?

To have a free and open-source OS that is fully compatible with windows programs and drivers.

I know, but I was refering to the silly comment about reinventing the wheel. :)

You misunderstood me.
It's like saying "why don't Torwalds develop KDE from scratch ?".
I think it's a waste of time re-develop a shell: there are many (with active and indipendent developers) alternatives already.
I think ROS dev-team should concentrate more on stability, features and compatibility.

Just my opinion, anyway.
