It's a real native english word: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portwine
What you refer to as port wine I usually refer to as port. Hmm.

Why cant we call arwinss with a german word?

As per chatroom discussion, Sangria, since it's Wine with added stuff.

Spritzer. Again, wine with added stuff.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spritzer

"A spritzer is a tall, chilled drink, usually made with white wine and seltzer or club soda."

ROS + Wine => ROSine (Rosine)

It means raisin in German, but I don't think it would be a big problem.

The word "wine" can't be trademarked because it's a generic word.

I thought about calling the branch WineOS (and Ged proposed this name in #reactos-dev a few days ago) when I was about to commit it, but "WineOS" implies something different, and as OS is usually percepted by its kernel, WineOS would mean some kind of a Linux+Wine monster.
Why is that? I think Wine OS is just fine... :geek:

Yes, we can. For example Porsche is german word - and all the world is using it. But try to read it in english. The same with Portwein (ei list man ai ;) ) Project doesn't need problems with how people read Portwein word(a lot of people don't know german language). And also in this case we will lost wordplay with Wine project name.

But it's only imho ;)

Yeah, and here we pronounce it as portwein (last part pronounced the "wrong", non-german way).

Bytheway, speaking of what we just discussed about PortWine and Wine, there are two similar examples:
1. AbiWord and Microsoft Word ("Word" itself is not a registered trademark either, look at: http://www.microsoft.com/about/legal/en ... EN-US.aspx ).
2. OpenOffice and Microsoft Office ("Office" is not a registered trademark).

I doubt those above mentioned projects got approval from Microsoft to use name belonging to Microsoft in opensource projects.
Yes, we can. For example Porsche is german word
Nice example, though Porsche, Mercedes, etc are kind of people names (though it's so branded nowadays that it's hard to imagine a situation if Porsche would be a totally different last name, like "hey, I just bought a nice Bragin Cayenne Turbo" would sound a bit strange ;)) and not real German words having some other meaning.

I do it all the time... as i dont know how Germans pronounce the word Porshe. Half of the world does the same. Janis Joplin didn't have this problem either.

I dont see any problem here. Milions of people do not know english, why dont we bar from using english words then?

It doesn't get lost, just gets more subtle.

Experience has told me that most technical people are very fond of wordplay, and are sharp enough to pick up the more subtle references. See YACC and Bison, as an example.
