Reactos should able to run even linux application

Post by aftabraja3 » Thu Jul 29, 2010 8:58 pm

React os should be designed in such a way that it not only run window drivers and application but linux application as well without virtual box or pc and later mac application. Reason: every react os user can get a best and perfect platform and taste other os application without leaving the current os

If you want Linux apps, you need Linux. We build a Open Clone of Windows. If you volunteer to write a Unix Subsystem, it might work. Otherwise we cant help you, sry.

Mention of Linux in this community tends to elicit responses similar to the mention of 'Ballmer' on Slashdot - only with less rhetorical flair - and this is one of those negative behaviours that turns me off this project in general.

Anyway OP, you might like to elaborate on, conceptually, what you mean by 'linux application'. It's easy to define a Windows app or a MaxOS app but what is a Linux application?

I'm posting this from WinXP and I currently have several 'Linux' applications open - and "without virtual box ...". Not sure if I could say I'm posting this from a 'Linux' browser (Firefox) - it depends on the definition, you see.

firefox is no linux app. you cant call any app running there a linux app. its multiplatform. and feel free to leave if its because it cant run linux stuff. you are wrong here

^ The kind of immature, bombastic response I'd expect.

I would tend to agree with EdmundCo here. By definition Firefox is a cross-platform app. The individual binaries are platform specific. Therefore it is not a Linux app, but has Linux binaries available. A pure Linux/Unix app would be one that is not cross platform and only has binaries or only builds on a Linux/Unix platform.

The proposal by the original poster would be a major task to implement, the equivalent of Wine though in this case Line, then we could demand that we can run Mac binaries, or PS3, etc. This project has a very clear goal set out to produce a clone of Windows, nothing more and nothing less, therefore the original poster has displayed that they have either not bothered to read the project's goals or not bothered to think about them.

Since questions like this arise time and again and could be answered by reading the declaration on the front page of the site I'm not surprised by the mods response.

From a computer science perspective, the definition for a native application is very, very specific. There is little to no room for misinterpretation like you are suggesting, jgwright.

While it would be an interesting ability, I believe you'd have some massive problems to deal with. Not necessarily just a unix subsystem, but managing it with a windows system. It would almost have to be some type of wrapper like wine, else you would start to have issues with the way that the filesystems would conflict, etc.

NO ! (MS Windows can't)

It *could* be interesting to have OS/2 compatibility some day... (Windows NT is an OS/2 "fork")

Do you mean that we could run Linux apps and we didn't know before ?

i think he is talking about Posix subsystem.
The probability of making a lignux app working there are lower than making a windows app working in reactos.

You can install coLinux, or install linux into a virtual machine, or recompile all linux apps with cygwin (most of them can be compiled with mingw+msys too), or install linux directly.
