Pronounciation of "OS" in "ReactOS"

Post by Nintendo Maniac 64 »

I've heard the "OS" part in "ReactOS" pronounced two ways:

1) one word - like in DOS
2) literally saying the letters O and S - like in Mac OS

So, which one is it?

There isnt any "correct" or "official" pronunciation.ReactOS is a non real word,so you can adapt the pronunciation to your local language. This happens a lot with Acronyms and Brands:
How do you say USB?/iuesbi(english way)/ or as U-S-B letters sound in your language?
I have heard: Iubuntu/Ubuntu also Jaiku/aiku or ejnu and niu (Gnu)
So i think the pronunciation is highly linked to your language.
Is it /riactos/ /reactos/ /riactous/ /reactous/ /reactaash/ or /reacteesh/?
You will discover that in each country is pronounced in a different way, maybe thanks to the word "Reactor",which seems to be somekind international(you can find this word in some languages),and each language has its own way to pronounce "React-or" word. The OS comes obviously from English(Operating System) but as Reacto-r and Reacto-s are quite similar people uses to pronounce ReactOS as ReactOR sound in their languages and just replacing the R with S sound.
The important thing here is that you feel comfortable when pronouncing it and not sounding as a "Wow-look-how-cool-i-look-forcing-a-pronunciation" guy :)
Of course that is just my opinion :)

ReactOS is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes

I pronounce ReactOS like in, let's say,

"Miguel Fernandez de Ortega y Reactos, the famed Latin American revolutionary..."

I always say it like "React OS", pronouncing the O and S like the letters. In any of the official videos I've never seen anyone pronounce it as a single word, i.e., "reactos".

Fireball claims he pronounces it as a single word, yet every time I've heard him say it it sounds like O S. I blame his thick Russian accent.

Complexity and ambiguity of this project's name is a major factor that hinders marketing.

The preferred way is to say ReactOS as a single word, "reactos". There was a confusion with the website writing React Operating System, but this is considered wrong.

Actually, there is yet another problem in Russian language, where to do an accent, two versions are possible: reactos and reactos.

so it IS like DOS and not Mac OS?

...dang it, why do I always seem to assume pronounciations incorrectly?! (I did the same thing for OLED as well - I said O.L.E.D. but apparently it's "oh-lead")

There's always going to be people who pronounce these sort of thing differently. I prefer the acronym form for OLED for example and I wont let anyone tell me differently. But when it comes to 'OS' it's always one word, same with Mac OS for me.

The difference is largely irrelevent; in this text driven age spellings of these words are canonical over pronunciation. IMHO it just comes down to how it sounds and personal preference.
