Windows 7 compatibility?

Post by danielspencer2 »

With windows 7 being released in a few months, will software that is made exclusively for Windows 7 work in ReactOS? For example, some software only works on Windows Vista and not windows xp.

The developers' intent is remaining compatible with the latest Windows. ReactOS will be compatible sooner or later.

Kind of derailing from the topic (just a little), but is there many more new API's that need to be supported on W7? Isn't it essentially just a 'fixed' Vista? I'd love to know how much has actually changed between the two.

usually APIS are added and not removed to let the retrocompatibility. Myabe the problem is more the driver support that the APIs support. Some of the 7 APIS will be created by Wine, and hopefully we can use some of them.

But were there as many API additions as xp->vista, for example, or were there just some changes here and there to 7? Do we even know?

Direct2D, user mode threads, I'd consider those to be rather big. And the information about new APIs in 7 has been publicly available for a while now.

Vista famously used DirectX 10, whereas Windows 7 ships with DirectX 11.
