green gnome os

Post by greenie »

I stumbled across this. Sounds very similar to frontage of reactos.
http://sites.google.com/site/greengnomeoe/frontpage
I will download it sometime and see what it is all about. The screen shot looked interesting.(sounds like it is just a replacement shell at the moment, with greater goals)

quote from the website
GreenGnome is a free, modern desktop environment for Windows XP. Written completely from scratch, it aims to become the first Windows like operative system and follow the Windows architecture designed by Microsoft from the hardware level right through to the application level. This is not a Unixlike based system (as GNU/Linux).

The main goal of the GreenGnome project is to provide an operating system which is binary compatible with Windows. This will allow your Windows applications and drivers to run as they would on your Windows system. Additionally, the look and feel of the Gnome desktop environment is used. The ultimate goal of GreenGnome is to allow you to remove Windows and install GreenGnome.

not a lot of info about it, nor any source to look at.

nice template for the site at least, maybe later there will be more info.

Edit: just downloaded and looked at the files, so far it looks like a shell replacement and not much else.

its install file says you should have a windows XP install setup for 1 user only, so I guess that lets out vista users, then it goes on to say that after unzipping it to a specified folder and running it as admin that the "Green Gnome OS is installed", I am confused about this but maybe they mean that this shell is the start of the OS and that later they will be writting the kernel and subsystems,File systems Ect ?.

I ran greengnome exe and got a gnome looking desktop. apps could be started in it but it was like the desktop was a normal window. When it had focus other windows would go behind the entire gnome desktop. Also when its exploror opened it would behave properly with the desktop. Just not with other window apps.
I installed it properly in a vm. Had the exact same behaviour. I just didn't have to run it.
I have no idea how this could be usefull at all.

it is a pity it loked interesting.

I can only access the frontpage and news due to bandwidth limitation.
It's not an OS but a GUI remplacement of Gnome for Windows (like KDE for Windows).

The site layout and etc seems to be copied almost verbatim from ROS.

The guy who wrote the description for GreenGnome doesn't know English too well, i think. Hence the confusion. "Operative system", sure...

That was the first thing that popped into my head, too.

Looks pretty archaic-looking. Not very pleasing to the eye.

It's just a bad shell replacement.
