Making Python official user's language interacting with ROS.

Post by Dany0 »

What about making python include with ReactOS, making it user's official language to communicate between him and ROS? Simply rewriting small portions of it so it would interact with ROS directly. It'd be fun to make applications this way!

You can imagine a situation like this:

User needs to rename all files in directories which name's end with -xx-xx-19xx. He does not have time to download total commander and learn it or he has no other chance then using python. He tells python to find those files and directories and make ReactOS rename it. 1 2 3 done!

Or this:

Someone invites his friends to home, he told his friends that he can programm games so they please him to show it. He downloads PyOpenGL/Panda3D BUT! Oh noes windows 7 is bad! He opens his ReactOS, and suddenly finds that it has built-in python support! With everything he needs! He downloads the new version * needed files+mods. he quickly writes 3 files(menu, game, __init__), downloads 50 free models+textures and shows his friends. W-u-Voala!

Python - why settle for snake oil when you can have the whole snake? ...

Downloading TC takes way less time then learning Python.

PowerShell has a higher chance of becoming the default cmd interface to ROS than Python does.

Indeed. powershell rawxx! :-D
ReactOS is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes.

ReactOS needs to support all languages possible.
PowerShell has a higher chance ...
That's great news. Microsoft is pushing powershell. It's required knowledge for some certifications. Being able to transfer existing knowledge of powershell from windows to ReactOS would be nice.

Normal ReactOS distros should come with Python, Perl, Powershell and cmd.
So, you should direct your request to ReactOS distribution makers.

From what I know about PowerShell, it's deeply tied to .NET. I really don't see a .NET clone being added to ReactOS, and it would not be worth it to do so IMO. (The Windows version of Mono is 75MB; that's over twice as large as our 0.3.9 release was!)

Maybe make Python more like VBScript. You can use it, but you don't need to know about it.

So you intend to break compatibility with Python AND Windows?

Ignoring my own dislike for Python, this suggestion falls under the category of, "it's not part of the baseline Windows" and thus will not be considered for inclusion in ROS. If you wish to make use of Python, you are free to install it yourself. However, this project will continue using the interface that MS has already defined instead of making up our own for no reason.
