in Windows you have codecs for WfW and DirectShow filter. The first ones appear in a list, the second ones: I don't know where (dxdiag, maybe).
I think reactOS should have a Codec-Manager (maybe a category in the Package manager) where you can see installed codes and remove them if no longer needed.
There could also be support for other "codecs" than audio/video. For example Archives / documents / image files, etc.
So software could use every archive etc. wich has a codec installed.
Install a uha/zip/arj codec and all programs wich want to use any archives can use all of them without the need to implement anything.
This may ease development in the future.

Basicly a improving standard. And becoming more platform dependant.
