Your favourite ReactOS advertising game

Post by Sami » Thu Apr 28, 2005 7:56 pm

OK, it is time to set up a poll for voting which game we will do for advertising ReactOS. This poll is up 10 days.

Here is few things to remember when you vote:
1. Main reason of the game is advertising ReactOS
2. It should give positive picture about ReactOS
3. The game project is separate project and it should not take time from main developers of ReactOS
4. Runs in Windows and ReactOS (maybe also in Linux but not priority I think)
5. This game is not necessarily included in ReactOS (see 1. )
6. It should be short project (hopefully less than year)
7...
Check: http://reactos.com/wiki/index.php/ReactOS_Game for more information
Check also this http://reactos.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=628

Here is some ideas of the games (from wiki):

* Ballgame by RomanH
o http://www.romanhoegg.ch/Ballgame_Beta.zip
o It should include ReactOS logo or Reacty somehow (Sami)
o still needs a lot of work :-) (RomanH)
o Maybe the balls could be atoms in different colors (Harteex)

* ReactRacer (TuxRacer with ReactOS art)
o Replace Tux with Reacty

* ReactBubble (Frozen Bubble with ReactOS art)

* Super Reacty. A simple side-scrolling jump'n'run game (with ReactOS art)
o Platform: SuperTux (http://supertux.berlios.de/)
o something like Super Mario, Giana Sisters, etc. (RomanH)
o could include Reacty as the main character (RomanH)
o enemies could be pieces of bloatware and malware (gracefully depicted and drawn, of course) (AcetoliNe)
o enemies could also be bugs in the system, which you have to destroy (AcetoliNe)
o The story
+ Reacty is lost into OS-land and finding his way to the net. Reacty is small and not really noticed but the larger OSs, His Mission is to find the coders that will set the world free, He must find the the core coders on the way and the coders will help him to grow bigger,(version number goes up after Reacty vists coders, coders to have familar names and tasks) and pass through different kind of hitches (other operating systems have set up barriers and blocks ower the way). Once reacty has visted all the coders he will be able to pass though the gateway and onto the net.There is also lot of evil bugs, malware and bloatware that is trying to kill Reacty. In the end Reacty will find his way into safe and familiar ReactOS -operating system and he can make ReactOS even better and more compatibility by using all the information gathered in his trip. (Sami, remixed by Headstrong)
o ReactOS logo and webaddress should be included into the the end demo.
o Reacty has many tools to aid him on his trip:
+ Patch shooter: A device that emits patches and bugfixes, the patch shooter can be used to destroy bugs and patch security holes in the system. (AcetoliNe)
+ Antivirus pill: After consuming this pill, Reacty can successfully avoid infection with malware for a limited time (until the virus definitions expire :). (AcetoliNe)

* Paintball
o A FPS shooting game using either the Crystal Space or Cube engine
o Cube engine is free/opensource and has bot AI code already
o See engine list below (http://wouter.fov120.com/cube/)

* ReactFighter
o A fighting game between different OS mascots (Harteex)

OS mascots beating each other into a bloody pulp will draw a lot more attention than any of the other suggestions, IMHO :)

It would be funny to play the ground hog game with the other mascots as the ground hogs. You know, the one where you bonk the ground hog in the head when he pops his head out of the hole?

Well, it could also be a platform game where other OS mascots are evil enemies ;)

Well, there are those games on the N64 and NGC which involve Nintendo characters beating each other into submission. I'd say these games receive positive enough attention :)

Note that a fighting game doesn't necessarily have to involve lots of blood, gore and other 16+-rated things. It can be comical/cute/other non-lethal stuff.

:) no problem. I started the game as a hobby project and I'll continue working on it. No need to make it an official project.

There doesn't need to be just *one* game project. There can be several working in parallel. I voted for the side scroller, but I think ReactFight deserves incarnation also.

Yes you are right, if we have lot of people to contribute :)
But if we want to have something ready really soon, I think we have to join our forces together and do one good game in as short time as possible.
But don't get me wrong. I think it is very cool if there is many ReactOS game projects in there, if somebody wants to do them 8)

Yes, SuperTux is just a nice clone of the good, old "Giana Sisters" C64 game.

So take this as base, replace the graphics with some good ideas for ReactOS - that's it. :-)

QUELBS fits Reactie better than anything. I bet none of you played in on the C64. :)
