Here's some concept art for your "Reactie" character...

Just thought them up when I was bored.

Okay, this is a re-rendering of Reacty.
I definately like this one better:

It still needs work, so keep the suggestions coming!
Quoting an earlier post in this thread:
oiaohm wrote:Good game char has to have expression. Clippy and Tux are good.

Could some people just do Reacty with some expressions would start a few Ideas.

Supertux and all the Tux games work because of Tuxs good looks.
Basically, facial expressions, gestures, etc. all define the character's personality, allowing one to identify oneself with the character.

In other words, give 'Reacty' its own, distinct face (and gestures). Perhaps the eyes could be placed directly on the nucleus instead of elevated above them, like a frog's. Or take a look at Rayman's face, who would also make a great inspiration for the limbs (or lack thereof).

Generally it's a good idea to keep a character design as clean and simple as possible. Details are to be added in a later stage.

I'm currently trying to create a cartoonish Reacty. He (?) still needs some work, but could be used in a jump'n'run like game.

Too bad the start menu couldn't use an animated look like that. :)

Nice work there, RomanH.

Wow, I did not expect so much interest for the game project :D

You all have done good brainstorming. Many ideas has been written to wiki, but not all I think? Maybe few more days is still needed, so that everyone have change to write down his/her ideas to wiki. After that we should go forward and vote which game we want to do. I could set up a poll in forum or we can vote in wiki, which one you like better? The vote should start in the end of this week.

I am sorry to say this, but I do not have so much spare time so I am just helping to managing the initial discussion and brainstorming. I hope one of the contributers will step forward and take lead after the initial brainstorming is done.

I apologize, I don't intend to undervaule anyone's work, but having a mascot with any small object flying around isn't looking good. It makes it looking like a dirty toon character with flies (insects) flying around. This associates on bad smell.
Find better way to represent electrons.

Sorry for my pure and bad english. I hope you will understand my post as a frendly advice.

Not necessarily. I you make them keep their planetary orbits (and not just buzzing randomly around) and maybe going fast enough that the orbits themselves are visible then it should be fine. Also it should be made clear, from the start, what those buzzing "flies" are. Maybe a splash screen with some animation showing the electrons circling slowly.

Hmm. Someone already made quite accurately all the suggestions I had in mind, but here we go...
Rayman like hand and feets would be nice, they would sit with the atom theme a lot better also the eyes should definately be "painted" straight to the nucleus instead of frog-like eyes which make him/her/it look like retard. :P

I definately like the character Roman did, but could it be possible to see the same thing with eyes attached on the nucleus?

Thanks for the feedback! :)

I'll keep working on the character and will post a couple of alternatives here. However, it might take a couple of days. I've got several deadlines at work this week...

Nice designs, MadRat and RomanH!
We might come up with a Reacty that rivals Tux yet...

Anyway, this is another re-rendering that I did of Reacty. I removed the limbs and made some other mods.

Also, the electrons move in the actual animation (this still doesn't do it justice).

This one looks real cute when scaled down to sprite-size.

I don't agree. Protruding eyes look a lot cuter and more alive. 'Painted' eyes look dead.

I also created the virus, but my efforts all went down the drain when the program crashed (I lost the virus completely). I'll re-do it as soon as I have the time and I'll post it here.

No they don't as long as you animate them properly. Make him blink every now and then, look around etc.

that's exactly what I just wanted to suggest :)

that's the look I was going for! However, with my limited skills the result still leaves some room for improvements. :D

My suggestion to prevent a flamewar on aesthetics (spelling?):
everybody who has an idea should post a draft/drawing/whatever on this forum. I don't think we all need to agree on one style. I think it would be great if we end up with a library of different Reacty sprites that any game developer can choose from.

Just short note. If you have good ideas, please write them to wiki :!:

It's fun to write into wiki  :P

I scheduled some initial tasks of the game project.

I will set up a poll into this forum in the end of this week, so we can vote which game would be the best. The poll will be up about 10 days. So if you still have good ideas that are not wrote down to wiki, you still have time.

If you have any comments about the initial prosess of the game project, please let me know.

Happy brainstorming :P
