We already have Far Manager, which is a native NT CUI file and archive manager, with plugins, adjustable hotkeys, multiple features and other bells and whistles. Next version (currently under development) will support Unicode and it will, probably, have x64 counterpart.

the famous MC was already included directly in ROS but no idea why it was thrown out ...

There is a mc for Windows on the net,add it to Download! list for 0.3.7,please.
mc was really useful for me on Linux and FreeBSD,
but the version in RosApps was old and a special port to ReactOS.
None of the devs worked on it and it was untranslated,
so they deleted it in a RosApps cleanup.

the GNOME project had a GTK+ mc version before they got nautilus in 1.4

It was additional, unnecessary code in RosApps. There are better apps, like named FAR manager or TC.

Hy,

Haos, mc is a commandline ascii filemanager, good used for prompt/console and if connect by
telnet or ssh , Christian's TC (this one from CH)and i had buy the version 2.X by Chris
( and he know about this Project.. i had tell him..), i know what's them Commander
and isnt usable for prompt... only for Gui, the midnightcommander it's need
only 3-600 K and not more and it's high usable, open source and under GPL..
also.. and -was- in Ros-CVS .. and was good ! also, it is not a question for a
Filemanager, it's the question of:

mc or not to be *bg*

(if yo' see what i mean frendly)

best regards

Where is "far"?

Post by steveh »

when i search for "far" in the tree of my local svn repository, i only find this:

linux:~> find svn/ | grep far
svn/reactos.org/trunk/reactos/dll/win32/kernel32/nls/far.nls
svn/reactos.org/trunk/reactos/dll/win32/kernel32/nls/.svn/prop-base/far.nls.svn-base
svn/reactos.org/trunk/reactos/dll/win32/kernel32/nls/.svn/text-base/far.nls.svn-base
linux:~>

No "far" application, not even in "rosapps"?
Does it have another name?
Or does it reside on another svn branch than trunk? (i only synchronize trunk and below)
Is it a rosapps project?
Or is it an external opensource project reactos, and has been integrated into reactos?
Where is the project's homepage?

What do you name "TC"? I suppose that is also an opensource program?
(not the closed-source shareware "total commander" which of course cannot be part of reactos svn)
Where is the project's homepage, if it is an external opesource project?

How about http://www.ibiblio.org/mc/
Is the source from the official MC homepage compatible with reactos? How to compile with rosbe11?
I think the official project page of MC has binary downloads only for linux. Windows and reactos users must compile the source themselves?
Their source is:
mc-4.6.1.tar.gz 23-Jul-2005 13:05 3.7M
Probably newer than the source which was in the svn rosapps till some time ago?
(the reactos version had no ftp functionality)

This kind of stuff is something you'll have to do by yourself. And everything that those guys were talking about involved putting a link of it in the Download application, not including it in the ReactOS repository, which would never happen.

I don't see a point to adding it, the amount of people who use it is tiny (remember the more options you have, the more you confuse people). Just install the web browser then use that to add it. It's just replacing a component already in ReactOS and your average Joe Blow should not have to try and work out what it is and if he needs it.
