You're really not going to get any answer regarding roadmap changes and the like for the time being. There are higher priorities right now that are being worked on.

Just like how we have to live with pidgin not allowing us to resize the chat input, and how The GIMP won't have adjustment layers, etc. I can think of more that relates to that. Seriously, people should start acting on these things, rather than just letting them lie around. I got scolded for categorizing stuff on the wiki too.
You got "scolded" because you did not consult with any of the web people on what it was you intended to do, nor did your categorization make sense in the context of the wiki structure when we did examine it. And no, posting your intentions on the forum does not count. Notice that we have another user that's currently doing a major overhaul of the wiki. He actually spoke with the web team, went over his ideas with us, and then proceeded.
We have a limited amount of free time here as well as a list of things that needs to get done. Roadmap is on that list, but it's not alone and there are far more pressing issues to deal with. And removing the roadmap doesn't really help much, as people will just start asking about future plans even more.
Fine, I know how much I did wrong, it was wrong... you don't have to keep drilling it into me though. But if you still ask me why I don't want to check out the IRC, I'll keep asking, "Why don't you want to use the forums much?"
1. Do you seriously want the devs to come onto this forum more? If you don't understand this question, search for previous incidences of developers posting on this forum. You'll notice a pattern where they're even more blunt than I am.
2. Realtime communication. You have a much better shot of holding onto someone's attention while talking to them in realtime, since it basically forces them to answer you.
3. I do not recall ever saying IRC was the only method. If you insist on not using IRC, which is ultimately your choice, go through the appropriate mailing list. They do exist for a reason and more of the developers actually pay attention to the ML than the forum.
If you want to reach the developers directly, the forum is the least efficient way to do it, since generally if you want your issue mentioned it requires someone who frequents both IRC and the forum to alert the developers. We are not likely to do so unless we feel it warrants their attention, with varying standards between all of us. So if you're serious about interacting with the developers and other members of the ROS team, do it directly instead if relying on intermediaries.
I'm sorry about that, but I'm not one to rely on mailing lists either. Both frustrations about them stem from other projects and friends. I'm very hesitant to use either of them. (For example, the GIMP Mailing list, which I didn't know how to join until I got a reply after a long while of waiting via bugzilla.) So I chose to just shut them both out. Plus, I've registered so many usernames on IRC servers, plus with them being so old, I can't remember them.
Just to fully railroad this topic off-topic, I'd like to state that I'd love to be on IRC more often, but with the freenode TOR ban, those of us who live in police states where only one ISP rules a monopoly and are FORCED to use TOR may not be able to log on. I know there's a work around, but it's complicated and I haven't figured it out yet. I just wish freenode would support the fascist dissenters like myself and reopen freenode to TOR!
There are online IRC clients like java.freenode.net and mibbit. It's how I bypass the very annoying issue of my apartment's wireless not handling IRC properly.
Yes, I used mibbit yesterday to get online and chat. The interface is very inconvenient compared to pidgin though... I still do not really know how to test the dbg version and find what the problems are with virtualbox (serial port pipe, file, ... very complicated stuff, actually). I read the wiki, and installed minicom, but honestly it is technically complicated, and I may not be savvy enough for this job. There is a .VDI put out of ReactOS though at http://veedee-eyes.com/veedeeeyes/ and I think ReactOS may be getting a lot of first time attention from that venue, and as it's performance is extremely buggy in virtualbox, it may be a very bad first impression for ROS with the general public who might try out a .vdi first...... I saw .3.6 listed on mininova just yesterday....... And it was in the top daily links, so I assume quite a few people tried it out, and were probably not impressed (the performance in vbox is pretty legendarily bad).
