Don't forget the aim is to make a Microsoft(r) Windows(tm) compatible operating system, as such is should have the same format compatibilities. It should supported in the OS out of the box, there is no need to make this just one more elitist operating system.I for one vote against developing WMA/WMV support.
Why can't VLC be forked for reactos to use. I may not be a programming guru but it looks like VLC has most of the work already done. The code is open source for a reason. Use it man use it. As for the Windows Meadia file formats I don't see the imeadiate need to implement them. In fact it might legally be in ReactOS's intrests to NOT implement them. Their might be some IP issues that need to be explored. Just a few thoughts. BTW I love what has been done so far.Phalanx wrote:VLC has to be the best video player for windows, except we need something that uses directshow like WMP does, supports their file formats and all the rest.
As much as possible the entire idea is to replace things we think should have been done differently in Windows... For me that means replacing Windows Media Player with something better. WMA/WMV support can be added through whatever we decide to use, but I dont think the ReactOS team should develop it. Build the OS, include VLC or MPC or whatever you want, but we really dont want a custom built one for ROS.

Third-party open source media players are not a bad suggestion, but I personally think an in-house Media Player is a much more pleasant and seamless solution.
It's not a question of being able to do the job. Other media players may be much better than WMP, but I still think it's important to have a Media Player integrated directly into the OS. Almost every package of Windows comes bundled with WMP, so I don't think ReactOS would be complete without it's own Media Player.
Even if other solutions such as VLC and Winamp become fully compatible with WMP, simply the fact that they are different to WMP would, I think, place a burden on many users. Not to mention the fact that the WMA and WMV (ASF in general) formats have firmly planted themselves inside the multimedia business.
ReactOS' goal is to clone Windows; I personally don't think it would be very attractive to hand someone a copy of ros and say, "Media? Oh, you can use xxx program for that". That sounds too much like Linux
Anyway, a ReactOS Media Player, if any, is still far off; Lots of technologies that a media player (especially one like WMP) needs to work under ros are still under development. But it's a nice idea that should be implemented, I believe.
That said, Media Player Classic looks like a nice option, BTW.

caveman LIKES chocolate.
we shall reinvent the wheel until it turns properly.

AN: Maybe part of the installdisc, and certainly well integratable, but not non-uninstallable or just plain not non-installable. We need to strike a line between the newbies who want things to be easy and the hardcore ppls who hate IE/OE/WMP integration we do that and we'll get a Nobel Peace Prize

Coming on, coming up, let me help ROS and I'll be able to look @ a life well used.
Media Player Classic I think does exactly that.perhaps it could be wmc striped down to just include the features that were in wmp v6.4.
ROS should make sure to include the popular OSS audio and video codecs (like OGG).
Has anyone thought about the licensing problems with having MP3/Mpeg codecs? RedHat Fedora Linux can't include them cause RH would have to pay who ever owns the license i think around $5 for each copy distributed (and because RH is located in the US).
