HTML isn't the best suited for user interfaces, plus they will need to know loads of obscure links. And why are you making a customizeable control panel? It seems rather useless.

Its that kind of useless bloatware that has kept me from using XP. Why would I want a large, convoluted, slow and useless interface when a hardcoded C interface works just the same at 2x the speed?

Believe it or not but some people like that interface mostly new computer users.. I personally cant stand it, But I believe that that is because it is designed for the new computer user, common tasks regular people would wanna do come right to the top. or it could have just been designed poorly, in either case this means html would still work...

Yes, but I'd like to know what actions you want to adjust or customize (e.g. folder contents, desktop, ...)

Because I highly like the idea of being able to download something and have a nice new interface for configuring something.
Why do you need HTML for that?
So that it flows well with the rest of the configurable options in ROS. I absolutely hate when, for example printer software have their own custom way to do everything.
It does not have to be html, IT JUST CAN NOT BE THE SAME as the browser ROS will use for other things.
That's a good point. New HP printer/scanner software unfortunately uses HTML for everything.
It does however, work ONLY with Internet Explorer 6 or higher, no Firefox, witch means it uses ActiveX and all other shit, will be a very hard thing to make that working in ROS.
But, the plain printer driver itself luckily works without any HTML or "Internet Explorer"
These new 'HTML' apps work very slow by the way.

I wonder if there exist alternate options, like a real program for scanning with e.g. a HP PSC all in one officejet.

I'm thinking 2 Control panels are going to have to be written, one 2k and before style, 1 fisher-priced XP style.

Once I get VS.Net 2k3 installed I'm gonna try writing up some apps to replace the control panel (in C++ cause I don't know C:cry:).

[OT]:
Don't you just love the days that you have to backup EVERYTHING you want on your computer running Windows XP cause your about to format it (yet again), cause some program (in my case Visual Studio.Net 2003 Academic version) doesn't work, or Windows just stops working?

This is the most time I've spent in Windows in months. I hope next 'format day' will be the one where I install ReactOS instead of Windows :D

Oh yeah it will have to default to the XP style (since thats newbie friendlier probably). Maybe some sort of 'experience level' control panel module should be written that you can use to toggle betwen things being HTML version and C version. Kinda like the thing that allows you to adjust the speed/looks option in XP.

I FINALLY HAVE SOMETHING TO PROGRAM!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

BTW: Does anyone know any sites that document what registry settings the different control panel modules manipulate? That will make the job MUCH easier.

one thing i hate incredibly with xp is its preview lacking support

not the picture viewer, i like that, but in 2000 it had a little preview on the left pane, for audio/video, anything windows media it would preview and you could click play, pictures would preview in it too.

that was all done using html if i remember correctly, think i tried doing it in xp but never got it working :(

and i think the 'fisher price' look is good, its friendly, the average user in my opinion would prefer it, everyone i know, except for people who like pure performance (ironically these people run athlon 2000 xp's with PC133 memory) use windows 2000 because it feels faster, and i have found it is, yet everyone else i know prefers xp because its pretty, and that gives the impression that its easier to use, i myself have given in, although mainly due to the HT, but i do like the little touches, like the dropshadows on the desktop icons, makes it look a lot friendlier, i got a good computer, why not use it?

out of interest does xp really use html? i always thought it was something more efficant, or part of the theme engine built in whatever its called, i'm on about the control panel that type of thing, and the users pane, i thought only the folders were shown in html?

think i may of gone off topic here a bit, but i think i may of actually submited a valid response, bit confused, its very late.

I would say mozilla.

Save you some coding.

Note extend mozilla link up with webadmin a nice improvement for linux as well as reactos.

Note mozilla provides most of the missing functions.

Everyone I know hates the Fisher Price look (including the people that aren't computer literate), most everyone either turns it to 'classic mode' (pre-XP), or use something like Window Blinds and StyleXP to reskin the desktop (thanks to MS encrypting the theme dll file).

Right away I disable the 'html' mode control panel and other things cause they make it harder to get anything done (1 double click, compared to 3 or 4 menus having to go through, not to mention they hide some stuff in html mode). If its decided that HTML mode will be used, I'll probably end up writing my own control panel in C++ or C#.

[OT]:
Formating my hard disk worked, I was able to install VS.net 2003 and it seems to actually be rather good (guess thats why they say languages are one thing MS doesn't always suck at). Its amazing the difference in speed between a fresh XP install, and one thats about 1 year old. I think its because of poor design of the registry maybe (slower seeks cause of more stale entries?)

^ good point to me, why do we need to customize the interface at all? pre xp didn't do that, did it?, and they were still popular, i think it would be nice ot have an xp compatable skinng engine, Eventually. but its far from nessicary

maybe a xml skinning system, like shareaza do

screw win xp

i think that we need to make reactos with xp pro compatibility, and then we MIGHT have to add the WORLDS BABYISH USER INTERFACE, so long as there ***IS SOME NON SADDO DEMAND*** for it.
(fuck micro$hit windoof forever!!)

I was a bit surprised when I found out how the WinXP software applet work.
It use html (hta) and javascript files (inside the appwiz.cpl file)!
You can open the files with mozilla and internet explorer

it only makes sense. i mean iexplore is just more then just a web browser, it is part of the OS.
