Counter-strike

Post by h3llfire » Sat May 20, 2006 8:38 pm

I am a Linux user for about a year, and the only reason of why I haven`t dropped Windows is because of the game Counter-Strike 1.6. As far as I have seen, ReactOS could be a nice alternative for Windows (I haven`t installed it yet).
So I need to know if I can run CS 1.6 and my Razer mouse drivers (with the on-the-fly sensitivity feature) properly on ReactOS.

Thank you.

for now, it is not smart to switch to ReactOS as your primary os. And specially not if you are a gamer... Reason is that ReactOS does not (fully) support DirectX, at least not D3D fully. Sound support could be better as well, as could network support. And then I have not mentioned the fact that ReactOS isn't known to run long periods after eachother, even tho some people run it for days without resets... It isn't stable tho...
I think counterstrike 1.6 will not run on it yet, as do your mouse drivers, but I don't know about those... For now, you'd better stick to Windows :(
as in the reactos description is said: it isn't even beta software, it's still alpha, so you'd better wait for the beta before trying to run it as your primary os ;)
don't hassle to try it out on a secondary partition tho :P

Hehe... Thanks for your quick reply.

I honestly got sick of winblows (just reinstalled it the 3rd time in 2 weeks) and i`m looking for solutions to completely get rid of it. I guess i`ll be waiting a little longer for ReactOS to become more mature.

Keep up the good work guys! I really hope that this project will not die like the other few attempts to make a OS fully compattible with windows apps. Go! Go! Go!!! :)

Yes, Counter-Strike is supposed to work perfectly with wine :)

Perfectly? I've tried to make Linux my primary OS without resignation of my everyday tasks. I've found many replacements for my programs from Win32 but I wanted to play CS also: It was horrible. It took me many hours before i've got it working. What i've got? I had 10fps, poor quality. But I made it working 8)

I'll choose ReactOS for it's native support for windows drivers, which are implemented good, ATi drivers for Linux sucks.

yes, wine and counter-strike isn't so easy, because of steam.

Steam already runs on wine, so what's the problem?

On windows instalation of steam+counter-strike takes about 15 minutes (or less). On Wine it taken me several hours to make it working. And performace was horribly poor.

uhm, I got it working one time... last time I was able to update the platform but not more, the game list didn't come up. And yes, in my opinion the performance is very bad, too. Still waiting for ReactOS 1.0 ^^ (Someone tried to install Half-Life from CD or something on ROS?)

just wondering (thinking of original half life) would the glide drivers for the voodoo cards work? as i remember the dll's would let u use the card in nt fine, and 2000, and xp and if i remembe correctly you didn't even have to install the drivers, just copy the glide dll's into the application folder!

i still ahve a voodoo 2 card around here someware which i will proberbly never get rid of...
