make 'upgrade' program ms->react

Post by dgosborn2 »

Hurry guys before MS releases v_ista
Make an upgrade program so ppl can migrate from ms to react and still keep thier apps. Have it available as an iso, or if possible also an app that they can run without booting from cd (easier to distribute to friends, they dont need cd burners etc.)

Along with this you should publish some benchmarks showing how some apps behave on xp vs v_ista vs ract. It seems like everything runs faster on react.

I can help with publicity also. Just email me if you want help. I'm not a programmer though but I can help you with some testing.

MS is probably going to delay v_ista another 3 months.

heading off obvious objections

Since they have existing ms installation you can use the ms code for some of the stuff you have not developed yet, then issue updates later to move to your code.

I have a killer app you can bundle. IF you are serious about doing this I will apply for patents on it and license to you. This will block out ms.

I know you are new to ReactOS, so I'll explain some things. ReactOS is currently very unstable, and the average session length before a crash is about five minutes. Not what we want our "Big Entrance" to display. Also, many Windows apps don't run on ReactOS yet, due to unimplemented functions and the like. Once again, not what we want in people's first impressions. I'm sure the devs will do this when ReactOS is ready for everyday use, but I really wouldn't rush it.

About the program you wish to be included with ReactOS, there are several requirements:

A) It must be distributed under the GNU GPL
B) It must be written entirely in C, or be easily converted to C
C) We need to know the function of your program, and evaluate it's usefulness

That said, welcome to ReactOS. I hope you like what you find here. We are very incomplete at this time, but the devs are working slowly but steadily on getting ROS ready for use. If you find any technical problems with ReactOS, you can report them in the Bugzilla. The community would also appreciate it if you could fill out a compatibility report in the Support Database for any programs you try with ReactOS.

PS: We are not in the market for patents. We are currently trying to work around the patents of others, and the nature of GPL'ed software prohibits patents. If Microsoft were to use any part of ReactOS's code, the GNU GPL dictates that the affected software would also become Open-Source, so MS wouldn't dare risk that.
