Can the following programs run on ReactOS?

I switched to Linux last year because I'm sick and tired of intentionally inefficient major commercial OSes/spyware being forced on me.

Everything was fine until this March, when Ubuntu released an OS updated that completely f***ed up my system, and it has never been fixed to date (it seems Windows 10 isn't the only OS with updates that ruin your computer). I'm gonna do a clean reinstall at some point.

I saw some videos on YouTube showing ReactOS running some games and I was impressed.

I am now thinking of using ReactOS on a separate partition along with Linux. But before I make that decision, I need to be able to use the following programs on ReactOS (because WINE fails and seems useless):

FreeOffice
LibreOffice
Hex Workshop
Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9
CloneCD
Virtual CloneDrive
pSX (a Sony PlayStation emulator)
ePSXe (another PS1 emulator)
ZSNES

Will these programs run adequately? Or will they run horribly slow with bugs, or just not run at all?

It looks like FreeOffice has never supported WIndows XP/2003, so it won't likely work any time soon.
Yes - some versions of LibreOffice work.
Hex Workshop seems to work.
PSP 9 should work.
CloneCD and Virtual CloneDrive should work.
pSX requires D3D. Once I installed VBox Guest Additions with D3D support, then I was able to launch pSX.
ePSXe fails to launch.
ZSNES seems to mostly work.

You are thinking of using ReactOS a little too early in ReactOS' development.

Yeah, I know, so I have another question.

How do you update the OS? Are their downloadable updates/patches, or do I have to do a full reinstall of a new ReactOS version (which would wipe out all my files on that partition) every time there is an update ?

Full re-install. Same reason as above.

Just place important files on a separate partition. ;)

I have a computer with 2 GPUs: one Intel, the other NVIDIA.

Can I choose which GPU I want to use in ReactOS, or will it just default to Intel?

Hello again. I have another question.

Will ZoneAlarm work on the current 0.4.11? I searched the forums and the only found that it doesn't work on 0.3.9 RC, but that was way back in 2009.

If ZoneAlarm doesn't work, what antivirus and firewall should I use with ReactOS?

Commonplace question:Will [application] work on the current release of ReactOS?

Commonplace answer:Try it and see.

Another one who thinks Zone Alarm is of ANY use to be safe... Same for ANY software firewall btw, all useless gimmicks to make ppl feel safe. Anti Virus... Dunno, ROS is not for everyday use yet anyways, so I would say, none yet ^^

I do not see anything obvious on the ReactOS.org home page that would tell nerv agent or others that the ReactOS compatibility target is Windows Server 2003 (NT5).

But I did visit ZoneAlarm.com and chose the links marked "Learn More" for both ZoneAlarm's free firewall and free anti-virus offerings. On both pages, "Windows 10/8/7" was displayed right below the big "Free Download" button. Apparently NT6.1 compatibility is their minimum requirement.

By the way, I haven't yet found a commercial anti-virus product's free offering that will run on a Microsoft Windows server OS.

The only anti-virus that offers real time protection for free that I can think of and still gets both database and application updates is Panda anti-virus cloud free. There are 2 others that, while they do not get any more application updates for WinXP, they still get database updates though, is Immunet 5.x (latest 6.x doesn't work on WinXP at all) and Malwarebytes 3.5.1 (have to pay for it though, latest versions do not work on WinXP at all). Immunet 5.x might be the better choice from this list because Panda is known to have high false positive rates and while Immunet 5.x isn't getting anymore application updates, it does use the ClamAV engine and it might be possible to sync the engine to newer versions of ClamAV yourself to get the benefits and security fixes from upstream atleast. Newer versions of ClamAv stil lrun on Windows XP, but they do not offically support it anymore (they won't fix bugs specific to WinXP anymore or test on WinXP as they claimed).

TLDR: Try Immunet 5.x or Panda cloud antivirus free.

ClamAV for windows works the last time I checked it (ver. 0.99.1)

What about firewalls?

I am also reconsidering using this in VirtualBox inside Ubuntu since WINE doesn't seem to do anything. If VirtualBox has it's own internal firewall, then this is my definite alternative to WINE.

None that I know of that are still being updated for WinXP. Guess you will have to make do with a outdated one until the ReactOS team gets a working firewall built in.

VirutalBox lets your redirect traffic but I do not think it has an actual firewall.
