Today i used ReactOS to solve a real problem

Post by Artlav » Thu Mar 10, 2016 12:39 am

A little backstory.
Altera makes FPGAs.
They also have their own software to develop for them.
This software runs on Windows and Linux.
In theory.
In practice, on Linux it can be iffy. Specifically, the device programmer acts up a lot.

So i was thinking - i need Windows to program the device occasionally.
It has to be small and lightweight, boot in a few seconds in the VM, get the file from a shared folder, run the programmer, and close.

And i wondered - would the new ReactOS 0.4.0 be able to do it?
Glitchy GUI aside, it seems pretty stable and usable.

Install Virtualbox extensions? Check.
Install Altera Programmer... slow... Check.
Install USB Blaster driver... Check!
Run the programmer, it finds the board... And it programs the board... o_O ... !!!

Great job, guys. Image
I've been following the project for over a decade, and the distance covered is enormous.

TBH, I am quite surprised to see it working, but I have no objections against that of course :P Nice to see that it works and helps you out :D

ReactOS is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes.

Huh. Would not have expected that to work. At all.

Wow, FPGAs are huge! This is really exciting. That screenshot should definitely go on the main website.

Don't worry Z, I say this every time I compile anything I write.
