I was looking at the start menu icons and I noticed that the settings menu icon did not match so I made a new one.

Please note, the old screenshot I had laying around and for the new one I was running the shell under Windows.

The screwdriver & key in the new icon look too small.

Key? It should be a wrench. And you are right, they look too small to me too. And to make things match more, I'd say that maybe more white needs to be added or something. The other icons seem to have more contrast.

To make the test more fair, maybe the background should be doctored to the color for the old. Paintshop should let someone fill the grey around everything.

I like the improved new one more, it is a bit more clear what it's supposed to be. More simple I guess. Though honestly there isn't much difference, I probably wouldn't even notice during regular use. I appreciate your effort though.

Correct, wrench :D It's just that when I wrote my comment I didn't remember the correct term, so I used a direct french->english translation (in french, 'wrench' translates the same way as 'key').

Yeah! :D This one looks nicer, the border of wrench+screwdriver look better than in the original icon.

I cannot see any noticeably difference! I am running Windows XP on a laptop with the resolution set at 1440x900 and colour set at 32bit.

It's not a wrench, it's a spanner, the one you 'drop in the works'.

As I posted in Jira, the second one matches better with the folders in the other Start menu icons.

My thought exactly. The previous icon looks old.

Spanner must be a UK term, since we usually use the term wrench in the US. And our version of the saying is "throwing a wrench into the works."

And technically, the official language of this forum is UK English. I was reminded of that when I adjusted my settings last night, seeing the time was wrong on the posts. I hadn't updated the DST setting when the time changed here.

However, Windows makes use of a number of US concepts.

Anyway, I still like the older icon better of the 2 choices.

Hm. People complain how the Tango theme is old and looks bad. To me, the old folder looks like the folder used when the screen color depth is 16 bits. I guess I can't please everyone. ;)
