[IDEA] Hotspot functinality

Post by forart » Wed Jul 01, 2015 5:21 pm

Nowdays almost all mobile devices has tethering, so it would be great to be able to share the LAN/WAN PC connection with other (local) wifi-enabled devices.

Some - maybe - useful links @ SF: http://sourceforge.net/directory/system ... y-updated/

Of course, involving 3rd party devs instead of just "stealing" their code would be great.

Are you wanting this to be an included functionality of ReactOS? Or are you wanting the OS to simply be compatible with software of this type? I don't think there's any reason for the former to be included honestly. The latter is already a goal of ReactOS simply because it's Windows software.

Also, you can't "steal" code if it's under a free & open source license. ReactOS already uses code from many other free & open source projects, without their direct involvement.

Windows has had this ability forever, just look up ICS, internet connection sharing and then combine it with setting up an ad-hoc wireless network. I'm sure it will be included once someone writes the code. Also the programs linked are probably just wrappers to this existing functionality and entirely rely on Windows and the wireless network driver's capabilities.

It was probably meant in this context as "to take up its burden on ROS devs' shoulders, instead of involving the 3rd party developer", forart knows the licences :-)

It was in quotes, meaning he knew it wasn't stealing. I think he was just meaning taking it on ROS's own to include and work on it as opposed to having the full support of the 3rd party developers. The only real way to steal open source code would be if you denied where it came from and took full credit for it. But open source projects don't typically do that to other open source projects, since they respect what others have done for them to build upon and want other devs to cooperate and to keep coding.
